I didn't see what your control is but if it's Mach3 the included slotting Wizard is great. It does ramping and other moves automatically (you can tell I'm a really technical guy) to optimize slotting. I just did some slots in aluminum and they came out fantastic.

Sounds like backlash in the leadscrews, or the lack of compensation from the controller for it.
