Manual Stepper Control

Post by FLSTEAM »

I have been following the coolant thread and was just wondering if anyone knows of a manual speed control for a stepper motor. I found a pulse card that needs to be used with a stepper driver. There must be someone that makes a single board that does it all. Just a start stop input and a pot for the speed.

The stepper driven metering pump seems like a great idea.

not sure if one is out there but a standard stepper board driven by a 555 ic as a virable speed pulse generator would do the trick

I would run it thru a opto isolator to keep things separate

Easy as cake to make. The triple nickel will work. I've programmed off-the-shelf microprocessors for a full featured control board. Here is one using an inexpensive microprocessor development board and a simple LCD control panel. The dev board and panel are each about 10 to 20 bucks. If you roll it all, the micro is a two dollar part and the LCD can be found for a few dollars on ebay, the rest of the components are just as inexpensive.

The versatility of this is endless, can be fully customized, and can handle up to around 15 different inputs so you can take advantage of end stops and other triggers.

In this case, I programmed inputs for setting the speed and rotation angle, in various functions using a rotary table. The same principles can be applied to linear motion or others.

Very nice setup but way overkill for what I am thinking. Remember I all want to do is run a lube pump. I want a remote on/off and a speed pot. That's it. Direction is always the same. Will start when the lathe or mill is powered up. The on/off will allow me to lock it out when I don't want cutting oil.

use a dc motor instead of a stepper and control is a lot easier

FLSTEAM,

All of the stepper indexers that I used in my past work
had software that came with them, for writing your
programs of operation with. They all had a manual
mode built in to the software package, that you would
use for stepping the system through it's program paces
line by line, and/or running the equipment manually on
a daily basis.

FLSTEAM,

You might also want to build this manual circuit.

or one of the many similar and available like it.

If you're referring to the 2 cycle oil injection pump rig I posted in Steve's thread, the motor was a simple 12VDC brushed PM motor which turns faster than a stepper motor (usually) does. I'm not sure but I think at least 1500-1800 rpm. Do steppers easily go that fast with reasonable torque? 12V motors & simple manual pot equipped speed controllers are cheap & cheerful on ebay.

You may going down an entirely different path though and if so, ignore my comments; it would be cool if someone comes up with a real simple & cheap manual stepper driver.:)
