Steam cylinder?

Post by Richard_W »

I am looking for a steam cylinder casting for an engine with 2 1/8" stroke. Where can I get one with either a 2" or 21/4" bore?

My TEL, but don't we look studious in the new pic? I believe that your picture, like mine was made a few years ago when your/my hair was still dark. Ah well, I will put up a more recent one later.

good Morning Richard,
Have you looked into allen models

the chloe cylinders are 1.5X2.25 bore and stroke. it is a little small on the bore
or you can use the larger cylinders which is 2 X 3.25 bore and stroke.
at lease you dont have to mortage you house to buy these!!!!
I hope to helps

Probably have to de-stroke to use the 5A, its a 2-1/4 bore x 2" stroke (backwards from what he wants) As for mortgaging the house, with the current exchange rate the price for the cylinder set (cylinder, heads, piston, valve, chest, etc) is about $415 US plus shipping.

If a 1.5" bore is acceptable, might want to consider the Tiny Power #109

What I am trying to do is change a 3 1/2 hp gas engine to steam. The bore and stroke of the gas engine is 2.470 X 2.125". So I am not really sure of what the bore diameter should be, when going from gas to steam. I don't know if there are any conversion tables or formulas for this. What do you think? I wouldn't want to break the rod in the engine.

There was an article in Live Steam or maybe Modeltec, that converted a VW engine over to steam. It was titled POPPETT VW or something alone those lines. You may see if there is some ideas there.

They might give me another idea, but I already have one in mind. Centered around this 3 1/2 HP engine. Do you know what issues the article was in?

For my Consolidation, the cylinder block is a weldment and will have a C.I. liner. Since scale isn't an issue, I think this would be my first choice. It would certainly be cheaper. Some have successfully used and advocate bronze bushings as cylinder liners. I also dont know any reason why you couldn't start with a chunk of C.I. and remove everything that doen't look like a cylinder.

Yeah Allen, that brings us right back to the Stuart prices we were talking about before Christmas - US$415 = Au$930 + shipping = over a grand. Probably cost around Au$25 to fabricate.
