The Home Machinist!

Hi,

Just found this site. I've had a long time interest in metal working and machining but never followed it up much. I would like to learn more.

I have an opportunity to purchase a Brown Boggs model 163-P box/pan hand brake, 48" wide.

I have no idea what these might be worth and if they are a decent model to begin with, or even how old it might be.

Can anyone provide an idea as to what it might be worth? Or where to find out more about it?

The solid removable pieces for the bend seem in ok shape but are not lined up perfectly. I assume this is easy enough to do. However are there things to look for that would indicate it might require repairs or be too far gone?

Is 'brake' or 'break' the correct term for the machine that bends sheet metal? 'Break' would seem more intuitive to me but I see both used.

It is a Brake, and I have used a home made job with 52 inch throat, will take 48 inch true. It leaves something of a roundy corner that grows larger with heavier gauge, but I can successfully bend 10 gauge about 16 inch wide, it just takes a lot of muscle, or a freind to lift the bending arm.

Have no Idea of commercial value for your piece.

I have commercial aluminum brakes too. used for siding and trim.
