Here is a pic of the spare 3 jaw Southbend chuck I bolted onto a flatplate and had the welder make two slots on an arc. Much more stable than a vice, I used it at work before retiring.

We had to cut slots across shafts and our mill vice did not have V's in the jaw to keep the shaft square. This way you were always on center. I haven't used it for anything else as yet.
