Lombard Steam Log Hauler

Post by tsph6500 »

The weekend before last I was fortunate to be part of the steam crew at Clark's Trading Post in NH for the steam-up of their Lombard Steam Log Hauler. I know it's a bit overscale for our hobby but thought it might be of interest.

This example was pulled out of the deep dark woods of Maine and has been pieced together from five donors. I've included a spec sheet for details. She weighs in at a svelte 19-tons and could pull up to 10 sleds loaded with 300-tons of logs. Operating 24/7 for the short spring snow season and having no brakes, life was hard and exciting and a little dangerous, especially when steering the Lombard log trains.

Hey! Thanks for posting! I've seen old pictures of them but seeing one at work is quite facinating!

I think I overheard someone say that Lombard patented the first "caterpillar" tank treads which are used on the haulers.

Armand Bombardier invented the snowmobile not too far from Montreal. Woohoo!

Actually Jim....the first use of the term "snowmobile" was by a firm in West Ossipee, New Hampshire (in 1912) for their patented system of converting a Model T Ford for winter use. The front axle was moved adjacent to the rear and a form of catepillar tread spread between the two sets of now rear wheels and skis applied up front for steering. Basically the same set up as modern snow mobiles except on a larger scale. http://www.american-automobiles.com/Art ... obile.html
In your first post...you mention the "short spring snow season." Ah...if only that were true! Today, March 31st, they are predicting 12" to 14" of snow for Mid-Coast Maine tomorrow.

Jim,

Thanks for posting the images! I would have loved to have been there to watch!

My understanding is that Lombard had the patent for the tracks, and Holt bought them out just for the patent.

The Phoenix log hauler was built under license using the Lombard patent, and looks much like the Lombard except for the power units, of which there were two two cylinder vertical engines, one mounted near the smokebox on either side of the loco. There are remains for about 7 Phoenix engines left, with two operational.

Regards,

Doug
