Vic, very nice work on that MARS light,

Clever idea combining motors from the RC aircraft world into the live steam world.

I think a nice "muffin fan" (like those used in PC computers) would do a lot if you have any problems from too much heat in the mechanism in the future.

Funny thing is, my Father, who hired out with the NYCRR in 1941 worked long enough to run the Lake Shore Limited under Amtrak. By then they had the modern version of MARS lights on the Amtrak diesels. He said they almost drove you NUTS at night. They are hypnotic and tend to cause the engineer to stare at the light going around in circles in front of him/her. This could cause them to forget all about those CLEAR and/or STOP signals in front of you.....

Dave said what I wanted to and that is the heat from the smokebox going to affect the plastics in the linkage and gears/motor.....

Kevin, It was always fun going to the hobby shop asking to look thru their gears, links and other parts and then be asked, what kind of car are you working on? I can see the light being able to lull you into watching it instead of what you should. My wife tells me, I have a short attention span, so I will have to be carefull when I run the engine. I'll attach a video of the light from head on and the beam projection . The beam on the wall is from about 6 feet away and at an angle to the wall. The head light is also on.


Fred, I am definetly concerned about heat. I have a baffle plate about half inch back from the smoke box door, so no hot gas is directly on the door. May also try and make a gasket of some sort to cut down on heat transfer between the metal to metal joint of the smokebox and door. I will hopefully be finding out in a couple months how heat resistant it will be.

Just way too cool! And, nice fighter jet, too, though I'm not of a plane guy. Nice work. Can't wait to see the finished Daylight gliding over the SVLS mainline soon.
