Like Frank my mill has power drawbar and just great. I have Lagun FTV2 mill. do the bridgport attachments fit the Lagun, I guess the question is, what is the inside diameter of the attachment?

Thank You,

Roger Q

Not having direct experience here I am a bit confused as to why a long head on the drawbar or else a socket and extension with a short head drawbar would not work whether or not the quill was extended. Doesn't the working length of the drawbar, from the shoulder to the end of the threads, remain the same?

When the quill is extended, the draw bar is pulled down inside a counterbore that has almost no clearance for the hex of the drawbar. As a result, there's precious little room that would allow for a socket, even one with a thin wall. The extended drawbar is pretty much a requirement.

I was blathering about what McMaster Carr calls socket head cap screws. That's the way it is even if it is a bolt 2" dia.

If I understand Don correctly, doesn't only the hex portion of the drawbar need to be extended?
I don't know what implications this holds for the power drawbar.
Sorry brother spro but your post went right past me??

All,

Much thanks to everyone who took the time to reply, especially Frank and Jim for adding pictures to illustrate their points.

I would use the head on my RF-45 manual mill, and it has a dovetail column, but I don't know if it's dovetails would match up to the Bridgeport head or the clones. I would think that it would not be too difficult to machine a base to attach the outboard support to the mills table, if necessary for a heavier cut, but I really don't anticipate using it for anything heavy duty. Now I just have to keep an eye on eBay for a good deal!

It can't be fastened to the table. That would result in a rotating cutter that could do no work.

I too was wondering about "outboard support "
Furthermore these "Bridgeport type" right angle devices are usually "inboard" supported by the dovetail of the headstock ram not the knee dovetail.
Harold is "spot on" (as usual), how could you move the table to feed your work if it was supporting the horizontal arbor?

The RF-45 has a different diameter quil. The BP right angle adapter is for a 3-3/8" diameter.

I have to admit, I never measured the quill, I just assumed from looking at it that it was 3 3/8, but you are right, it's smaller looks like 75 mm, or not quite 3" on my calipher.

So in the words of Emily Litrella, "Never Mind"

Still, my thanks to everyone for helping out.

Not so fast!
Nothing prevents you from making a split sleeve that would adapt the head to your spindle. Turn and bore it in one setup and it won't be any different from a head made to fit.

Before making the decision, however, might be a good idea to see if the quill has any tendency to rotate in the housing. It must remain dead still in order to successfully use the right angle head.

Harold
