Gib tightening on HF5980 3 in 1 machine

Post by BentTooner »

Hi, all

I've been having fun learning about my HF5980.

This may be obvious to everyone but, just in case someone is as slow as I am, I thought I should post this.

I couldn't find anything in the manuals about adjusting the gibs so I took the carriage off the bed and noticed that the set screws did not move at all when I started tightening/loosening what I thought were the set screws from the outside.

I realized that the gib adjustment for the carriage on this machine is performed by removing the OUTER set screw, adjusting the INNER set screw so the carriage is snug and then re-installing the outer set screw to lock the inner screw in place.

When you install the outer set screw, it will tighten the inner one a little bit so you have to play with it a couple of times to get it right.

I hope this helps someone.

Some guys have replaced them with longer screws and locknuts to make adjustment easier.
