Jack,

Absolutely gorgeous! And it looks like it's been run already. Question: High-Heat black is, well, black. The smokebox isn't black? You sure that's what you used? I have BBQ black on my shelf and it ain't that color :-)

ken,

If you check the photograph:

http://www.steamlocomotive.com/hudson/nychud.jpg

You will see that the smokebox of the prototype ex works is not fully black, therefore the colours applied by
Jack are correct.

Best regards,
hudson

Hi Jack,
First off, let me congratulate you on some very fine work.
Secondly, who is the lucky guy who owns this piece of fine art?
Thirdly, where can it be viewed in person?
Thanks,
Tom

Sorry it did not make it to the meet proper, though I enjoyed pouring over it when it was at eye level in the shop. The explanation of how you made the scale ribbed tubes was fascinating, I think that should be a future demo for Chaski or Live Steam magazine. :)

Would loved to have done a night shoot with it (with complimentary prints for the new owner) but it sounds like it will be gone before I get a chance to come back there.

That last photo of it on the track sure says everything. Looks great on the ground at last.

That's not what I asked.

Jack said he used Rustoleum BBQ Hi Heat Black. I use it all the time, infact I just painted my entire boiler with it. It's black, not dark grey. The smokebox shown in his photos of the actual engine are dark grey. I'm just curious, not trying to make a federal case out of it.

Hello My Friends
Thank you for the very kind compliments, you are much too kind. The engine Belongs to John Mills and will reside in Illinois. The smoke box paint has been described earlier in this thread. For some reason it looks lighter in the photos than to the naked eye. The engine was test run at Bittercreek today and all went well. On initial fire up Monday there were the usual surprises with a new engine. Some little leaks here and there and a stuck safety valve due to a lot of crud in the boiler (metal chips and such that I was not able to clean out). Fortunately Barry ( Supercale ) is only a few blocks away and he showed me how to service his safety valves. So here are a couple more photos to look at. This has been a most enjoyable project, the New York Central J1e is one of my all time favorite engines. Next up...a Lackawanna Hudson, and to finish George's Disney American. Too much fun!
See Ya' later Alligator..
Jack

Jack you are a genius!! This thing is seriously astounding, all of us can do nothing but drool at such an imposing piece of machinery, and I thought its home would be here in California. :( But you work has been admired by many and you never fail to impress. Now we need to see some pictures of the Disney American!! Thanks and Keep on Steamin' My Friend!!

David

Jack....

How many turns of the wheel does it take to move the valve gear from center to full forward?
