The Home Machinist!

Hi steamers,

today i become a Film from a friend. He builts the Loco in the Film.
The Loco is a german Br44 1167 2-10-0 3Cylinder oil fired machine.
The scale is 1/10 the gauge 5" she weights round about 360lbs.
The machine pulls a full scale freightcar with the weight of 7 tons.
Listen to the amaizing Sound of the loco the stack talk is so nice.
The new model of the builder is the N&W "A" class i attached a foto
of this loco with the "Y6b"class of my dad . The foto is from a german
model measure.

in the second photo what material are the wheels made out of on the loco chassis in the foreground?

Hi Harlock,

the wheels are made of bronze and the frame is out of a special SS steel.
The Loco in the Video is completly out of SS steel.

ACTUALLY, it is die Lokomotive which is a FEMININE auf Deustch. (although feminine has little to do with English gender in this case).

Guess it explains why we live steamers have so much trouble with Loks from time to time.

It is quite an interesting video and a beautiful model.

I would guess that the track is a slight DOWN GRADE.

See the fellow on the right hand side who keeps moving the orange wheel-chock along?

Someone doesn't want that 7 ton car to get rolling down hill and smack a beautiful model / maker in the tender (or head).

For those of you who have never been involved with moving heavy loads (relative to the weight of the motive power):

Note how the cable is rigged - LOW DOWN so that a component of the towing vector does not end up as a LIFT on the tender. it is difficult to tell from the video, but it might actually start out with the cable BELOW the track level (at the full size car). This would give a DOWN FORCE component, which would help as traction, assuming the actual cable attach point is on the lok and not the tender.

You say the ENTIRE LOCO is Stainless Steel (rostfreier stahl?)...even the BOILER? (I had to ask).

I don't agree. Something has to stop the pulled car before it strikes the loco that's doing the pulling. Did you take note the track was a temporary, and runs out where he stopped?

I see that the small track is temporary, yes.

I also know from decades of experience on full size railroads, that given the speed travelled, if the track were dead flat, the rolling friction of the bearings would stop the car without need for a chock long before the few feet between were an issue.

Safety is always a good thing - so the chock not lost effrort.

Either way, it's a commendable effort.

Oh, yeah! Big time! To say nothing of a very beautiful engine.

Wasn't there also a German add for a shoe company? Something like Das Boot?
