Your $30 special gravity feed spray gun from the tool stores do a good job. I have painted show cars and everything else you can think of with them. They usually come with 2 nozzle set ups, one for acrylic and one for enamel. The plastic cups can be bought for under $10 each as well.

OUCH!

It's about $8 here.

$35 a litre here and $90 odd for a 4 ltr.

I use a devilbis hvlp. Like you, I hate to do all the prep and then end up with something that looks like a brush job. I admit I'm not much good with a brush. Cleaning a gun isn't a big deal after you've done it a few times. Like others have said, it is imperative to keep the gun clean. On the negative side....if your painting a milling machine and you don't take the time to bondo it like they did when they first painted it, you might as well brush it. The grinding marks in the castings are something no amount of paint will cover up. I just finished a bridgeport and it looks great until you get close enough to see all the imperfections in the castings. The other problem I have is cure time. I have a logan lathe thats been sitting curing for about a week now. If I started assembling it tomorrow I know I would scuff the paint. I don't use urethane because I don't want the waste disposal problem. Autobody toolmart usually has good prices on spray equipment. Good Luck, Chuck

I had noticed this on my milling machine too. They did a fantastic job with the bondo / bog and the finish is quite smooth. The issue was the old chap I bought it from sold off loads of other gear so while people were moving their things out, they scratched up the machine.

When I lived in Australia, I had a different set of problems with regards to painting than what I have here. In queensland, it was the dust and insects that seemed to be the bane of re-sprays. Here in Norway, we seem to have non-stop rain which results in humidity that is much too high for painting. This does mean that there is relatively little dust in the air though.

I spent some time online last night and checked cheap guns. I am looking at 60 USD for a Chinese no-name gun. This was the cheapest I had found.

Paul.

This doesn't directly address machine paint, but this company: http://www.touchuppaint.org/
sells AUTOMOTIVE rattle-can paints matched to the color number on the car. It's possible that they may be able to supply machine paints as well.

Not crazy-expensive, it was U$17 for a 12-oz can, U$22 for a 16-oz.

Most paint stores can do that locally, particularly automotive paint stores.
Take in a sample to color match. They will mix it and package it in an aerosol can for you.
The price is in that range.

What is the cost of shipping from the Midwest to the Vikings best? Mebbe a coupla Horror Fright (Harbor Freight) in a DHL box is the ticket. Are there severe import duties on finshed products, or can we make it 'parts' and get by? Does used, avoid new tax?

Just thinking out loud.

I would shop at Eastwood.com for paint guns.
http://www.eastwood.com/paint-equipment ... t-gun.html

As for the HF type, this was primered and shot with an HF level HVLP gun. Dupont Fulthane single stage. 6 years of racing and exposure, looks about the same today.

The import duty is 25% and that is charged on the product and the shipping. Plus, there is a checking fee at customs of $30 USD too. When I order things I always make it a decent sized order to justify the cost of shipping, import duties and the customs "checking" tax.

How about on a gift? I run into the same sort of problem here in Canada (although the tax is only 13% and the post office brokerage fee is $8). If you have family or a friend in the US, you might be able to have the item shipped to them. They can then sanitize the package and forward it with "gift" clearly checked on the label. Now, here that only works were the item is worth less than $200 -- if the item is worth more, then it doesn't matter that it's a gift, taxes are payable on the full amount (not just the amount exceeding $200).

You would incur extra shipping, but the US post office is now offering flat-rate international parcel boxes, so it makes it real easy for the sender -- no issues over weight or size: if it fits in this size box, then it's this much money. Slap the customs sticker on it, declare a value, tag "gift" and away it goes...

It might be worth a bit of research.

G'day Torch,

I have received a few items this way however I don't currently have a contact in the US that can help me out. I have loads of family in Canada but even then I always feel bad asking for a favor when I can't return one in the same manner. There's not a whole lot people want from Norway that they can't buy cheaper in the USA or Canada.

Paul.

Canadians are not used to being lumped in with the US as a source of "cheaper" consumer goods -- there was an article in the paper the other day examining the reason Canadians pay more than US residents for the exact same item -- retailers put the blame on the suppliers, who say "Canadians are used to paying more". If we're cheaper, then it must be really bad in Norway!

But I understand where you are coming from with regards to payback. You could try to repay them in reindeer steaks or fish, but Customs often takes a dim view of that and the post office is too slow anyway.
