Earlier today I was talking with an amature gunsmith and comparing notes about hobbies, and both of us thought that the idea of taking one of these to a livesteam meet would be quite a bit of fun!

With a 14" barrel in 1/8 scale you would have a 1.75" bore! It would clearly generate quite a bit of attention to say the least!

So are there any working live steam versions of this out there at any club?

I believe that that one is at Dahlgren it says below.

I think there is also one at the Washington Navy Yard, as well as a Nazi one at Aberdeen. With that being said there is no way I could spend years building a model of anything Nazi related. But a US railway gun that would be real cool!

Putting that to use at a live steam meet would be a blast!

If I am not mistaken I believe that they usually pushed these with the locomotive behind. Could you imagine riding towards the back of a train having a locomotive pushing one of these in front of it  That would be pretty wild. So has anyone actually built a Rail Gun?

One other fun part of the project would be figuring out how to turn out the Weilen Breech Threads on your lathe. Take a close look these aren't your normal single point threads to cut;
Image Even if I don't ever build a rail gun I have always wanted to try turning out a set of Weilen breech threads just for the sheer challenge. In 1.5"/ft scale you are talking a 1.75" Bore by about 7.5ft long barrel! I can't help stop thinking about just how awesome of a thing this would be to have!

Here's a video of them firing during WWI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7al-ZJmSlM

Does a working model of one exist anywhere?

As far as the breech threads, I believe there was description of a model of this type of gun in a very early Model Engineer. I believe it was one of the reprints of the early editions.

By the time you have turned all the wheels you would have enough for a whole train!

You could use compressed air and shoot potaoes with it.

indoing some checking here are some more color images

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railway_gun

here is a bunch of photos from the rail gun

http://www.williammaloney.com/Aviation/ ... /index.htm

here is a video of one of the arsnel videos at the last it shows a shaper for cutting the breech block

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFN1yEvAhyc

at least it could be a well documented build

as a foot note the us navy scraped out the 16 inch spare barrels that were stored at the hawthorne nevada ammo depot last year. i mention this because the articles mention the guns were built using surplus battleship barrels and several went to europe and were maned by naval gunners during ww2

Next week is again the Model Engineering show in Harrogate.
In recent years there was a model shown (for 5" rails, under construction).
If it is again on display, I'll post pictures.

that would be pretty cool as a propane cannon....

unfortunately one could not make a functioning gun as I found out a number of years ago.

I've built a half scale gatling gun....which is really cool...and wanted a mate for it...so I decided a whitworth rifle would be neat until I researched the ATF website.....buncha roadblocks

anything over .5" bore cannot be rifled....

and cannot be breech loading.

those types are considered DD weapons(destructive device)

a 1/3 scale whitworth would be a 1" bore. and is breechloading.

then I thought how about a krupp 88.....in 1/10th scale....use 8mm mauser rounds, but diagrams and drawings became a problem to find.

and with all the stupid gun laws in cali....the fun of even target shooting faded.

my .02
