Just give the file to the Pandas and let them clean it!

BadDog, did you remove the charge before hammering that 357 Magnum flat?

Quote Hammermill:

as a safety note get a file handle also. or a big first aid kit.

End Quote:

Totally agree - and who has room for that big a first aid kit?

I always either file left-handed on top of the work (handle in left, so I don't have to reach over the spinning chuck or work and my body's out of the way if it goes ballistic) or hold the file bass-ackwards on the underside of the work - with the advantage that if it *does* pick up on a chuck jaw, it hits the splashback and not me...

Dave H. The advice of holding the file like a left handed person would do is golden. But placing the file under would ony work spinning bacward, otherwise the teeth would not work.
---------------------
The file tip should be held well past the chuck so has minimal chances to snag in the jaws.
Another thing to mind, there is no need to grab the file with all your strenght, we are not doing heawy removal, a light hold will hurt less in case of a catch.
Of course if the part is long enough there is no need to be close to the chuck.

Note that Dave also holds the file by the other end when going under the work...

That should have been easy to guess, but I did not.
