Sorry if the title lead you to expect a weather report, but "The" Tornado passed through Newark, in England, this evening, not the best pics in the world but it is the newest standard gauge loco in the world! Running on the East Coast Main Line it was looped at Newark to allow a scheduled passenger train to pass, then it continues to complete it's run from York to Colchester.

No apology necessary...great photos!

What could be better than a clear stack, a green board and heading a mainline passenger run?

Thanks for sharing.

Actually, it ISN'T the newest steamer...

There is some little 0-4-0 in India that now holds that 'honor'...

and I THINK it is standard gauge, but cannot swear to it.

Granted, there isn't much comparison, but hey, steam is steam... :D

There was a similar article in the Hindu.

http://www.thehindu.com/business/articl ... ?css=print

It's a tender locomotive of 2-8-2 wheel arrangement with rack and adhesion drive.

I don't know Bill, nicer looking, Yes, but the Indian loco is far more interesting mechanically. Did you notice the 2nd set of valve gear for driving the pinions between the frames? Wow. That is the definition of cool....

Checkout this photo of one of their older locos. Same basic mechanical arrangement as the new locos. The upper set of low pressure cylinders evidently drives a pinion in between the frames:

yes on complex.

Swiss did that decades ago for their rack locos.

Either way, I think it is more cool to have a steamer build and approved to run main-line steam...and out there doing it.

Granted, I would rather it be a FEF or something 'real size'....USA 'real size', but beggers cannot be choosers.

Ken,

In Switzerland they overhauled several old rack and adhesion locomotives bought back from Vietnam which
are similar to the locos used in India.

You can see a rack gear wheel (There are two rack gear wheels on the auxiliary inner frame) at:

http://www.schmalspurbahn.ch/DFB/x0302524

You have to click on the forward and the backward arrows to see 2 other photographs of the auxiliary frame.

Best regards,
hudson
