Big Dave,

So sorry for your and Mom's loss. I'm a dog lover but not a killer dog lover. Would love to have had that dog in my sights. Again, sorry for your loss.

Jack.

Dave:

Sorry about your wife's and upir losses. We used to raise sheep. Never lost an animal to coyoteds (some folks do). But "pet" dogs rabaged our flock. We weren't there at the time. A wolf or coyote will kill to eat. Dogs kill out of pure cussedness. Can't believe what that monster did to the hail screen!

Best policy is the Sheepraiser's Three Esses: "Shoot. Shovel. And Shut-up." I assume that is what you did.

Bob

Update: To my surprise two of the Appenzellers returned home by 2pm. One was denuded on the back and a nasty scratch/puncture from a bite, but otherwise quite active. So the attack tookout 7 birds, none consumed, just killed for sport. I visited a neighbor, thought to be responsible, and it deteriorated into a near brawl. (did not like my dumping dead birds on his drive, for dramatic effect.) Any way, when the County officers showed up upon my request, they were a bit vexed to be at a chicken call, and did not view the MURDER scene, as Rose put it. (Mom to all the feathered and furred animals.) well neighbor H. ambled down, and we had a meeting by the road, and it turns out that his boxer was NOT the dog involved as I had clear sight at 20 yards. Brindle loooks black in shadows, but wrong dog at any rate. The report I needed was informational in nature, for future problems and to document the loss on accounting for predation. After meeting with a third neighbor, Jr, the black Pitbull looking dog with white sox was identified as to owner. Once my cooler head returns, there will be further discussion with this long time personage, whom I have known for over 20 yrs. I could not work in the yard much today, as my inspectors that follow me around are corpses, and the joy of their antics missing. (Ya I enjoy simple things.) Only spots and piles of feathers, like a bedding shop blew up. We often let the girls to run free on the property when we are around, and they are funny in various ways.

I cannot believe he destroyed so completly the door with the hardwre cloth on it. Chicken wire has been know to fail under concerted attack by Racoons and dogs, and heavier hardware cloth is the normal substitute. Most of our pens are built with 1x2, and 2x4 wire wrapping, 14 ga. It has proved its worth, as another pen was breached with teeth pulling the chicken wire apart, last winter.

As far as destroying the threat, I had opportunity, but did not want the burden of harming someones pet. I diid not know the carnage created at that time, but am comfortable with the snap decision erring on life. Armed with a full report and knowledge of the probable repeat, as this probably was a repeat of other losses, I dont think such quarter will be given again. But we are animal lovers, even if we get a chicken sandwich once in a while. Somewhere earlier in the posts for last year were the rarer speckled Sussex that were pets, Tattletale, and Sassypants, who just disappeared within days of each other. The losses of the named pet birds are more upsetting. In the open topped pens, we harbor a rooster or two for security and defense of the flocks, as a rooster can put up a heck of a battle for a chicken(losing usually) to protect his hens from any threat. So they usually are named, Rufus, Jack, and Brando are examples of such birds in the general population of mixed egg birds.

I take pride in the small flocks we have of some traditional, and rare Birds with all the work put into salvage materials, for stylish, but economic coopage to keep them comfortable and safe. Such losses are hard on the otherwise glowing spirit, of life and ownership. Thanks for the kind words about the lil guys in our charge.

PS: Oh, and reading back, he opened the egg dor that acessed the nest boxes for the apps, not the main door with its tripple lock. Still he is learned enough to know where locks are, and chances them open.

I spent today framing up another hoop coop, that will be the saloon. I love the idea, a little fun. I trimmed out the front panel like the first one and cut the door. Now to screen it off, and add the tarp/shield. I have a used one, so inkeeping with being an ultamate recycler, will duct tape the silver side where it was cut for a job, and use it fo the sun/rain shield required by this design. Got some ordered chicken nipples for some waterers for the pens, as they provide the best answer to clean water for the birds, better than any pans or founts we have found.

Took some 'spare' equipment apart to rob it of bearings for the antique Wheel Farce tractor, to mow more grass with. Got the bearings ID'd, for new ones, and the tractor is back in service, such as it is. I blew up the drive train for my mower on the 235, and now must do a bunch to repair the gearbox and drive system, (again).

Wild weather yesterday, rain came down like Milk for a while. A tornado of some size touched down about 1.5 miles form here, skipped the road, went across a store parking lot and went up. A former corner gas station turned repair shop, had its entire glass facade blown in. For me, it lifted the roof finish from the porch area of my White rental, and turned about half of it skyward. Its a mess. Worse than that, a worrysome tree, between my house and another on the West side of the property, has a tree that leans over that Rental. Well, it has pulled its roots again, and is now about 2 feet from the edge of the roof, and extends all the way to the drive with its gracefull curve, over the roof. It will have to go soon. It is about 30* of lean to the East, and a definate hazard to the house, as the tops seek the Sun. My trimming of a large 6" top branch, did nothing but invigorate growth in other areas, making it more top heavy.

See me later, Gator.

Wow, Buddy can you spare a dime!
In persueing legal matters today, I am running out of cash and options.

After eating my noonday meal, ( I am diabetic) I get a call from a steel bar processor. I have an interview tommorow. At least the Personell agent sounds about my age. SOOOOoo... Here we go again.

Some people spied my Western style chicken coop, and have asked me to duplicte them. Not much money, but treading water is gettin harder to do. They are an easy build in about 4 hours. The Nylon ties take the most time, but provide the best security against raids, and pulled staples, taking about a hundred for construction.

PS. Mom took the injured Appenzellor to her work, yesterday, and she got some stitches to close up wounds still open. (Ihope he does this gratis). He admitted he has never done the work before, but has taken classes. ( REALLY!) Never in a thousand years would I have thought of taking a damaged chicken to a VET to get fixed. She said her favorite made a LOT of noise when he used the betadine solution on the open wounds, but was quiet and docile, when he put the stiches in.. Go figure. Outside customers, worried by the racket of this screaming creature, were very impressed with the looks of the repaired bird, and I have no doubt will add to the legend of this VET clinic.

AS things turn, making repairs to a wounded tractor seem to get farther away... Never enough time.

Have faith. Even a blind squirrel finds the occasional nut. It really is about your turn.

Well it looks like the Nut found the blind squirrel. Jim Burg, the maintenance manager said he would like to try me. So off for the physical, which I passed, and now only need word on when to start.

Now if only I can hold it all together for a coupla years.

Flat Rock Metals, Bar Processing inc. This small bar plant does special treatment and blanking of barstock. 3yrs ago, they had 50 employees, they are down to 20, and lost 3 maint guys these past few months, to illlness. They are rebuilding their business after the economic hit, and are installing some new machines.

So I may be off and running.
