What happend to using BBC that I told you about. You get to much shrinkage with the use of plaster.

Charlie you should have end caps on the core box. I'm guessing that you will pasteing it together. You could also make a small match plate and pin it together to form a one piece box . Ram the box from the end and open it to make a one piece core no pasting neccessary.

Dave....

I would definitely use plastic/epoxy type media over plaster to make a mold or multiple pattern copies. Plaster can be pain.

You are more up to date with the materials used in the last few years to make "plastic" molds and copy patterns from them.... Been years since I've made any.

Maybe you could post a list of what's available and preferable to use?

Would help the others who have never made a pattern or mold and who might contemplate doing it in the future.

Hey Dave.

Doing it as you say with a small match plate. After pulling the two mold halves I will clamp them together and fill and ram them from the open ends. (This is how we made Fenders) Then use CO2 to harden them up.

Plan is to make up around eight of the cores and store them in a Tupperware Bowl to keep the moisture away until I can use them.

I am hoping to cast four of the journal boxes leaving two spares on the bench for the future. Also to have them when I screw up one in the machining process.

See you the 21st. Will bring my camera.

Had a great day with Dave and enjoyed seeing the Penn Live Steam Group.

While shopping in used bookstores also stumbled on a copy of "The American Railroad Passenger Car" by John H. White. It was a two volume set from 1985 in good condition for 30.00

Except for being away from home it was a great weekend.

"The American Railroad Passenger Car"
Probably the best resource on the topic.

The copy of "The American Railroad Passenger Car" has turned into good bedtime reading.

Definitly worth the thirty dollars.

I also found a copy "Southern Railways System Steam Locomotives and Boats" on line

so while I am getting no time in the shop to speak of I at least am keeping my interest up.

New question.

I am home again and working on patterns and core boxes again.

In the mean time I have been looking at my two frame halves. I have planed on drilling and bolting the two frames together to machine them as a matched pair. I am planning on starting off with the top line of the frame and use this and the center of the middle journal box as my reference point.

As a newbee I am needing information on the simple act of drilling holes for the various things that bolt to the frame.

If I lay out the holes with a center drill and then drill the hole out will it go straight thru the entire inch and a half of bolted together frames or should I lay them out and drill them individually on the two seperated sides.

On my (smaller) frame I drilled through with them bolted together. It should go a lot faster than separately.

I also drilled holes in the tops and bottoms of the frames bolted together ensuring that they were aligned for-aft.
