H.J. Coventry 1/2" scale K4 Locomotive ???
Gents,
I'm hoping someone here will be able to help me "identify and/or confirm" the actual "builder" of the subject locomotive.
It does appear but am actually quite unsure that this loco chassis could well be one of the very few, 1/2" scale, 2-1/2" gauge Pennsylvania Railroad K4 by the late H.J. Coventry of Baltimore MD.
As well, I'm unsure about the trucks which might or might not be original to the chassis. However and in addition to the chassis and trucks, I also have the copper boiler complete, the cab and many related components of this gorgeous locomotive chassis.
Any features I should be looking for to help identify ? See pictures attached for reference.
Many thanks for any help that can be provided,
Stephane

Some more pictures of my 1/2" scale LE locomotive !
The last picture is one of the very few surviving examples of the subject H.J. Coventry K4 locomotive !!
Best,

What you have is a 1/2" scale Little Engines Hudson, the very last photo you show is my 1/2" scale Coventry K-4, which you can see is very different.
Your locomotive has "D" valves disguised to look like piston valves...where the Coventry K-4 has actual piston valves.
The support for the Walschaerts gear's expansion link is very different as well. What you have will make a very fine little locomotive and I hope you will finish it as we need to rekindle interest in 2 - 1/2" gauge....but it isn't a Coventry K-4 and I don't believe it is an L.R. Miller Hudson or Fisher Hudson either, as the Miller Hudson and Fisher Hudson both use piston valve cylinders.

Dear Keith,
Absolutely fantastic ! Many Thanks for your expertise !! Wow, your Coventry K-4 is indeed quite awesome and "borrowed" the picture from the Friends website, i.e. from John's "Wanted" section !!
This last picture is somewhat small and could not really distinguish the telltale features but obviously you did so with ease. Why is the cylinder block and steam chest -NOT- marked Little Engines then ?
I will be posting pictures of the boiler for reference later.
Cheers,
Stephane

Yes what you have is a Hudson (4-6-4). I am unsure of the company who made the castings though. You can also see the style of the trucks for the tender do not match the PRR style tender trucks. This locomotive is almost certainly meant to be an NYC Hudson. You now have multiple variations of the Hudson that you could model.

- You could model this class of Hudson's if you were to change or ignore the fact that the drivers and a couple of other details were different.

If you look at the NYC Hudson page on Friends you will see that there were multiple company's and people who made castings for the Hudson in 3/4" and in 1/2" scale.

Just some examples of how there were multiple people/firms/company's who made the Hudson in both scales.

There is a very good reason for the castings not being marked. When Martin Lewis first introduced the 3/4" and 1/2" scale locomotives, they were serialized in The Model Craftsman magazine....with instructions on how to make your own patterns to have the castings made locally. I had a 3/4" scale L.E. Hudson that was built by the late Harry Hansen on New Jersey, and I still have the foundry patterns that he made to provide his own castings.slhdsnet@dsuper.net wrote:
