Re: Ford 60 V8 Factory Built in the Late 1960's
Thanks Ken for the links.
In 1960 I bought a 35 ford 4 door for $20 and put a 276 CU flat head in it. It was a sweet running car but tired of it after denting the two front fenders so traded it for a 50 cady and $270. Oh Well, Bought a 34 ford 3 window in 1966 and still have it. I replaced the flat head with a 389 pontiac and it was a daily driver until I moved to Wa. St. It is now in the process of a re-do after sitting for almost 20 years and the 389 will be replaced with a .030 over 455 (461) pontiac. If only I had more money and time.
Jack.

Jack,
That sounds like a real sweet street rod.
It should move right along with that new engine in it.
Have Fun.

Re: Ford 60 V8 Factory Built in the Late 1960's
This subject spurred my memory of some particular cars which came into the junkyard i worked in the late '60's. At the time we didn't know what the heck they were. I investigated and found they had flathead V-8's . I spent some of my own time getting one running and thought the car facinating in it's way. It was very deluxe with leather seats and strange electrics, although ruined by weather. It had a 5-speed transmission and column shift. Simcas. Neat little engines.
Re: Ford 60 V8 Factory Built in the Late 1960's
I have seen 4 speeds on the column but neverspro wrote: It had a 5-speed transmission and column shift. Simcas.
a 5 speed on the column.
That must have took a little getting use to, shifting.

Re: Ford 60 V8 Factory Built in the Late 1960's
It was probably a four speed like you saw, Ken. It slipped into another detent and was unseen before. No excuse for being wrong. Thx.

You were not wrong
I did some research and there has been 5 speed column shifters
offered and installed in vans and cars all over the world.
I just hadn't heard of them until you made mention of them.
Again I have learned something new.
Thanks.

Re: Ford 60 V8 Factory Built in the Late 1960's
It was a long time ago and my memory... I thought they were Fiats, somehow they were Italian but i never knew of a Fiat like these. I'm not even going into jousting horses and anything as impossible as that. They were compact sedans of the style of an early lexus or Toyota camry. Squared off and uninteresting, predating that style.
What may be interesting is the way a V-8 of any size was controlled by its gearbox. It depends whether it is fwd or there is a transaxle at the rear. There doesn't need to be stick shift on the floor and waste the space. There were shift levers right thru the dashboard when the transaxle was ahead of the engine. I do not remember, which means these cars were Not fwd but someway it made more sense to shift gears thru the column. Now that I recollect, they had transmission problems as in Shot. Yet shot then, means something different now. I'm thinking back now.. to a time when I crawled under and saw nothing, it was all sealed up. I know it had a clutch and then ...it went into a transaxle at the rear. I didn't know what to make of that.
