Steam to the rescue

Post by ToddC »

We had our spring meet this past weekend and ended up having a little more excitement then we planned. The two MCC Dash 9s lost electrical power stranding them and the train half way around the railroad. The solution? Couple up the H10 which was following and shove!

Once we shoved the train far enough past the switch we were able to get a heavy Mikado on the head end to assist. Other then a minor derailment we made great time up the hill. They told us we would never do it....

After a minor derailment we get started again and take the train the rest of the way up the hill.

Now THAT was totally cool! Like seeing the steamers working at capacity like that, especially working hand-in-hand like that to move a heavy train over a grade.

What track are you running on? It looks really nice.

It is a private track near Shermans Dale PA. We do travel with that H a good bit. Drop me a line if you would like to see it in person sometime.

That certainly appears to be a beautiful site and well maintained. You must have a good size club and organization in the area. Looks like it was a beautiful day for Huffing and Puffing. Doc Ferguson, new to the site. :D

Nice to meet you and welcome Doc. This is a private track, no club, just a good group of guys involved.

Thanks for posting those, Todd. That is a beautiful railroad you all have there.

The sound of those locos working hard over the hill was awesome. :)
Once again we see that Steam is King! ;)

That would be fun. Making the engines work, not just running steam through them and out the stack with 95+% of the power still in the steam.

Keep up the good work and have fun.

Sounds like a scale version of UP 844 having to shove a broken down freight train over Archer Hill in the 90's :D

Hello Todd,
Tank you for posting this amazing sequence to us all who like steam at it's best!
That H 10 did the job like her big sister once it had been intended to do at PRR's rails without any doubt.
Your RR looks phantastic with such a long and steady ruling grade!
Maybe you like a similar (but smaller) job we performed on just 5 " some years ago in Switzerland.

Please consider bringing the H10 to Waushakum in August!
