Some live steam material I bought at a local auction

I think some of this stuff was for a 999 locomotive.here is the boiler.

It is just a smidgen over 32-.5 inches long.

Here is the frame that was marked 999. It is 25 inches long.

There are 4 drivers. And 13 smaller wheels.

Plus some axles.

After I find out what this stuff is it will be for sale.

Welcome to the forum. You may want to add your location to your profile, that way it appears under your name on every post. (You can see mine just below my name.) This can be achieved by clicking on 'control panel' in the upper right corner of the page when you have scrolled all the way to the top. OK: I believe what you have is a set of castings for the NYC&HRR #999, which is a high-drivered 4-4-0 American. There is one here in TN, which was finished out and running, built from the same castings. Someone, and I can't remember who, made a few sets of the castings back a LONG time ago. There was one locomotive, somewhere in the St. Louis area, that was supposed to have been started, but never finished. The guy who told me this was Paul Brien, who has been gone for about 5 years now. Paul had started on the locomotive, and it was finished by another member of our club.

The locomotive is a good performer, although a bit slippery. I've run it, and it was sweet. It will definitly roll on if you want her to.

Both the tender trucks and the lead trucks were spoked.

I have some reservations about the steam dome - it appears to be stainless steel, I think? I am not sure how well SS and mild steel take to arc welding together? The SS cap is fine, I am talking about the major portion.

Comments anyone?

That Mid South Live Steamers 999 was built by Greg Gloss, Greg, this is Mike Morgan in OKC, I would be curious as to your opinion, if any, on these pictures of parts to a possible 999 posted by painter590. I am not sure how well SS and mild steel take to arc welding together?

That is not uncommon to weld superior metals to mild steal. Any qualified welder should be able to tell you the filler rod best for the job. From the picture the weld looks to be well done.

any idea why there is a weld bead around the upper half of the barrel a few inches in front of the firebox?
