Narrow Gauge Cab Lighting

Post by lfisher »

I just thought some of you might be interested in some pieces I'm 3D printing and investment casting for my 2.5" scale modified Allen Chloe aka 'Kalakaua'. I thought it would be nice to do period appropriate cab lighting so I've developed a Dressel style water glass lamp and a Baldwin Loco Works / Dressel Steam Gauge Lamp. Both are posted on Shapeways and I'll post photos of the final pieces when I get them assembled. The lamps are built to accept 'flickering' 12V LED lights in the Yellow/Gold color although any LED or Grain of Wheat type lamp could be used. The Water Glass lamp is a two piece affair to allow for installation of the illumination while the Steam Gauge Lamp is one piece since the LED or bulb will fit into the lamp through the light opening.

The Water Glass Lamp is 1.63" tall and the base is sized to accept 3/16 MTP pipe for mounting and routing wires.

The Steam Gauge Lamp is 2.23" tall and the base is sized to accept 3/16 MTP pipe for mounting and routing wires.

Contact me if you have any questions.

Yes,

Drawn in AutoDesk 123D then 3D printed to wax for investment casting in brass. Very happy with the results.

Any idea what the cost would be for several sets of lights? I have two 4-4-0 Americans in 12" gauge I am working on restoring/upgrading, and your cab lighting would be fantastic. These are 3" and 4" scale locomotives, but 2 1/2" probably would work just fine.

Thanks

Glenn,

I could scale them up to whatever size you'd like and then get you a number as far as cost. What would be best for your needs?

I'm working up a small web page that will offer the several styles of lights that I have developed. The steam gauge lamp with the tapered shade will be about $145 or so as a kit. The water gauge lamp will end up around $90. They're set up for 12V. power and I will offer them with a couple choices of LED lamps: flickering or non flickering and a few colors.

By the way. The web page will also have some other lamps as well. The next one to be completed will be a rectangular steam gauge lamp also of the Dressel style.

Fascinated by the quality of your work. Cab you post photos of the wax masters you use?

How far out time wise are you thinking? I was looking at building a set of these this year. Yours look great!
