A champion is born.
Re: A champion is born.
Oh, let's see what more trouble we can get into today in the shop. After mlling out the middle section and not needing the 90 degree flats on each end we stick it back in the lathe and finish off the ends. The little brass piece you see on the top edge is the oil port. The taper you see also is very shade tree machining. Stick the thing in the mill vise and put a 1/4-20 nut under one end. Whoopeee !

Next step in the journey is the actual cross head. This is made with brass bearing material and I'm using a stainless steel 1/4' rod. It's connected with an # 002 taper pin. The left side of the guide has a brass packing gland. The dia. where the rod comes through is .010" oversized to account for misalignment. The cross head is further machined and then add the little top piece to slide on the steel surface of the guide. Too bad this is just a stupid dummy reverser.

Finding the dingle of the dangle. Everybody has their own way of doing things and that's good just as long as you get to the distination. For me I tack things together with my Miller mig machine. Bang the parts around till I get it right and the silver solder it all together. We're gettin there with this thing .

Paul,
So many nice details done perfectly!
You're right - everybody is making parts slightly ore more different than others. Depends on tools, too.
I'm eager to follow your making of that power reverse your way!

Oh , let the games begin!!!! This is where all the time and money make it all worth it . After taking EVERYTHING apart and painting bare metal it's time..........to make it a real locomotive. And finish it !!! This one of my men showing off our paint job. Soon I'll have all the plumbing underneath and the trucks back on her.

Two Alco Northerns (aka Little Engines Old Northern) and an Alco Hudson. Paul you must be a glutton for punishment. Just one Northern in a lifetime would be enough.
