Early American pass car drawings wanted..

Hi All,

Looking for early American passenger car drawings. Just need basic drawings. 1.5 scale 7.5 gauge is what im going to model. Would like a car that scales down to about 5 foot in length. Does anyone have or know of any drawings on line?

How early? There is a book titled Railway Car Construction, by William Voss, originally written in 1892, that has lots of drawings. It was reprinted by the Orange Empire Railway Museum, and you might be able to get it on line from one of those scanned book sites.

White's book on passenger cars is awesome. it includes from the very beginnings to the 40's. Great drawings as well.

I just bought the American Passenger Car set for $23.00 including shipping. A reprint in like new condition. For over 700 pages I thought is was a bargain.

The locomotive looks to be 1860-1870's style. Also, a passenger car that is only 5' long is going to be pretty old if it's built to scale. Maybe something like this is what he's after:

Check Google Books or Archive.org for Carbuilders' Dictionaries and Cyclopedias. I believe the earliest were published in 1879 and 1888 and both have drawings for a Central Pacific immigrant car. The books by White and Voss listed above are also excellent resources.

You are looking at a forty foot car in 1-1/2" scale.

The same length as a second generation boxcar.

Most of the early Pullmans were 58 feet plus over
the end beams, or 7 feet plus in 1-1/2".
The Sierra Railroad has a pair of shorty Overton cars modeled in HO by Roundhouse. You could find one or both of them and scale up.

I seem to remember that Narrow Gauge & Shortline Gazette did a series of drawings of early Virginia & Truckee passenger cars. They might be worth a look. Also the Nevada State R.R. museum in Carson City NV might have plans of those cars.

The very short car body length of the Sierra Railroad combine and coach designed for the sharp curves of the Angels Camp Branch might be a great way to go. Built by the Holman Co. of Francisco in 1906, they were also lightweight at about 30 feet long in the body. This would scale out under the 5 foot parameter required and not look out of place behind the American steamer. The Gazette published plans for them in the past. Today the cars still reside under cover in Jamestown CA at the railroad museum where they could be photographed and measured easily.
