MAKE YOUR OWN SAFETY VALVES

Post by Trainman4602 »

If you’re brave enough to make the attempt to build your own safety valve here is the opportunity.

I have a number of these castings the hex base is machined and the body is as well. The casting on the left is a muffler casting. Missing are the valve seat, spring, spindle, blow down ring and boiler fitting. I have no prints. That is up to you. I posted a picture of a cut a way view of a full size safety with a muffler so you can get the idea on how it works.

When I purchased some of the LS MFG line these came with them. I already had the Mercer valve so there was no need to duplicate it. I had visions of finishing them for sale but there is only so much a person can do.

I have around 50 sets. The price for the set is $50.00 plus $6.80 shipping

PM me if interested

The valve that Dave has is a Coale Safety valve. They were available in sizes that I am aware of from 2½ to 4 inches.

You can check out the following patent numbers 459268, 855431, 825380, 488309, 461237, 297066, 96999, 657086,
338827.

There are also decent drawings in the 1930 & 1941 Loco Cyclopedias

I have several items on prototype Coale valves including complete prototype drawings for a 3" version as was used in locomotives on the Tasmanian RR that I can share. I was able to use them to reproduce a couple of internal parts for our full sized valves on ARR 557.

What would you need to copy them? I would like a set.

Thanks!

Andy (or anyone else) send me your email. I will also send the drawings for a 2" valve and the maintenance/overhaul instructions for Coale valves from several railroads.
