GP-38 and SD-40 Drawings

Post by davidqueener »

Gentlemen,

I have another one-to-one scale project I have been asked to help with, and I am hoping some of you can help me with prototype drawings. Knoxville Locomotive Works (KLW) will be repowering several full-size GP38s and a couple of ex-Canadian SD-40s with MTU 4-stroke diesel prime movers, yanking the EMD 16-645Es, and retaining a rebuilt EMD AR-10 alternator. I have been asked to draw the frame for both locomotives in SolidWorks and the HT-C trucks on the SD-40s. So as with the earlier SW1200 project I worked on, I am looking for EMD drawings for the

(1) GP-38 and SD-40 Frames
(2) HT-C truck general assembly and part drawings
(3) Elevation & Section drawings of either locomotive

Can anybody help?

Thanks!

Clarification:

I was told today that KLW has actually purchased several SD40-2 locomotives and the frames on site are from GP40s, not 38s. The GP40 and the GP38 had the same overall length (main difference was the turbo-charged 16-645E on the GP40 as opposed to the non-turbo-charged, Roots blown 645 on the GP38)--so the GP38 and the GP40 may share the same frame. Apparently there is a difference in length between the SD40-2 and the earlier SD40. So to clarify, I am looking for

(1) GP40 / GP38 and SD40-2 frame drawings
(2) HT-C truck part drawings
(3) Elevation & Section drawings for either locomotive

Thanks for your help,

what about the full wiring diagrams? got into a batch of them. seams from my memory way larger than the standard elevation drawings. from memory they where 12/14 feet long, got in a pile of stuff, mentally noted and stuck away.

SD-40-2 SD40-2T SD50 SD60 HTC truck drawings

I sell a copy of the Original EMD blueprints for the HT-C truck blueprints. Its now a black line on white paper, instead of a true blueprint.

Every part, is shown on them as part of the assembled truck. Its in 3" scale, so its a big one, at 10' long and 36" tall.

EMD HTC trucks in our "Marketplace". http://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/vie ... hp?t=90068

The only location to get real EMD external and internal layout drawings is in the "Locomotive & Car Cyclopedias", the 1980 is a really good edition to find the versions of 1980's EMD locomotives that you are searching for. The illustrations in there are the real EMD drawings, but they are very small. You might have to redraw them using by scaling the drawings and using the given dimensions and correcting them and also comparing your work to surviving unmodified locomotives as you work on your files.

Everyone,

Loco112's link offsite is to a page filled with pops-up and malware--stay away.

One piece of good news: One of the employees at KLW came up with an EMD frame drawing for the SD40--which is helpful--but still not the SD40-2. The wheelbase on the two are slightly different and the SD40-2 is slightly longer overall.

Cheers,

Another bit of good news: A fellow model railroader came up with an EMD frame drawing for the GP39. The GP39 shared the same frame with the GP38 and GP40, along with their Dash-2 counterparts, that is, except for differing motor mounts and some piping.

Hopefully that SD40-2 frame drawing is still out there along with part drawings for the HT-C truck.

The level of information in the Car and Locomotive Cyclopedia drawings may not be detailed enough for what you're trying to achieve.

To correct a little bit of the info mentioned earlier in the thread, the 1980 addition featured only three EMD locomotives.
The GP-50, F-40PH, and the AEM-7.

The 1974 edition features the following General Motors EMD locomotives:

GP-38-2
GP-40-2
SD-38-2
SD-40-2
SD-45-2
SD-45-T2
SDP-40F
F-40C
SW-1001
MP-15AC

I do have the 1974 Cyclopedia and here are the dimensions shown for the SD-40-2.

Overall length of locomotive over couplers: 68'-10"
Between center-line of bolsters: 43'-6"
Bolster center-line to locomotive end sill (both ends): 10'-7"
Locomotive height: 14'-8-3/4"
Locomotive width: 10'-3" Over U/F Jacking Pads

The locomotives pictured with these dimensions are Canadian Pacific 5648
and Norfolk and Western 1633 (High Short Hood Version)

I've scanned the two pages (S15-26 and S15-27) from the 1974 cyclopedia if you'd like to have them for reference.

David;

An SD-40-2 locomotive is also shown in the 1984 Cyclopedia.
The dimensions shown in the ’84 book are different than what is shown in the 1974 Cyclopedia.

I’ll send both the ‘74, and ’84 scans.

John,

Thank you for the scans. This is very useful, basic information. Lucky you! Not many model railroaders have a collection of Car & Locomotive Cyclopedias.

One quick sad story: The main library at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville had a very substantial collection of these and the predecessor publications, when the two were separate volumes, going back into the WWI era. I browsed a few of them in the late 1980s when at varsity, but did not appreciate them then. And then, the library threw them out, into a dumpster, sometime in the mid or early 90s. A transportation professor on campus found out only after the fact--otherwise he personally would have gone dumpster diving. I would have too.

Thanks again,
