Hand Pump Drawings and Castings
Hello,
I was looking back through the threads for pump info but didn't really get answer. I am looking for a double action hand pump for my Wendy project. I would like to mount it in the cab on the left side looking at the boiler backhead. I also plan on an axle pump (or crosshead pump) and an injector. I have 2 old super scale economy units from a fallen live steamer. Seems like 3 ways to get water into the boiler is best.
I thought I remembered a drawing and material list for a double acting pump some time ago. It might have been in a mag. I am not adverse to purchasing a casting kit but I would like to build the unit as opposed to buying a completed pump.
Thanks in advance!
Mike

There is no need to bother with a hand pump or even an axle pump. You only need the reliable Super Scale injector. Don't knock yourself out pumping you'll never catch up. If it is that bad blow down the boiler. Remember you only one lap away from the bays. That is unless your at Train Mountain

If you want a double acting pump to put in the tender, I have drawings at www.mehrs.com that you can build from bar stock
help yourself
I have never felt that having an 'extra pump' (or two) on board is a problem.

In 20 years of running steam I had one time when the water got too low and the pressure was too low to run the injector. I was at the steaming so I hooked up the water hose and added water.

I an always amazed at the arguments against a little bit of extra safety.
Guess the same could be applied to seat belts...never been in an accident so do not need to wear them.

I'm not against pumps but on my Chloe there was no place to put one. No tender, just a riding car and saddle tank on the engine. I was just offering that you can live without one just like you don't have to have a way to drop the fire. Just put a glove over the stack and turn off the blower.

AH...well....if you have no place to put it then you have no place to put it is different than people being adamant that they are a waste of time / energy.

Well Bill on A boiler bigger than 8 inches I think they are. Just my thoughts and experience. Even an 8 inch boiler it is questionable as to their effectiveness.

Dave:
I fail to see what the diameter of the boiler has to do with respect to a pumps effectiveness.
If you need water you need water and you use a pump.
I was not aware that you size an injector by the diameter of a boiler -> I thought that you sized an injector (and pump) based on steam consumption

Isn't that the point?
to keep the water level the same?
