I have found that Ebay is a good source for onesies and twosies. The shipping is usually low or folded into the price, and, in contrast to the early days when Ebay had problems with flaky sellers, they've cleaned the place up and I've had nothing but good experiences there for several years. I go for the "buy it now" options as I don't have time to play with the auctions.

I have been an E-Bay seller of HO, O, O-27, and some other items for many years. I have bought from a few suttlers out there and so far finding what I need easier on Amazon but looking for an air tank there would be a waste of time.

I will have a squiggy at what might be on E-Bay and see what I can do.

Thanks

You might have luck on Ebay with Chris' suggestion of a paintball tank.

Chris, I checked on several different options for an air reservoir, the paint ball gun high pressure canisters are $40 each (Cheapest I found on Extortion Bay) and the Clippard tanks are very nice but also $40 each. I am going to town this week and check on getting some ABS piping, some caps, and build new ones using the plastic. I want them to fit in the carriers I made for our supplement brakes offered by Tom Bee. I checked on using a propane cylinder as noted by several, but I haven't kept one of those in decades. I will hang on to the next one that goes empty and make one out of one of those as well.

Thanks again to everyone for all the help. I learned that all PVC applications for air are not legal in Kentucky for the reason noted by several but ABS is acceptable.

I know this is an old post, but I was searching for info on compressors and tanks and ran across this.
I would not use plastic for any air application, it just gets too "crunchy" over time. The used propane canisters are a good option if you can safely remove the pin and assure it's totally empty. Propane in it's gaseous state builds up alot of pressure so the tanks are built to take it. The paintball canisters do expire after a few years, and are pretty much worthless then. I know our local paintball field charges $7 for an air fill, and for $10 they will sell you a filled tank that only has a few more months left on it before it expires. After it expires it's not allowed on their field. I happen to have 3 of them, so it looks like I have some canisters:)
Another source for buying new tanks with tapped NPT fittings ready to go, is the places that sell the air suspension stuff for the low rider vehicles. They make them in all kinds of different sizes shapes and diameters to fit in various places.

Yes, I agree. I did not actually build this tank I bought it from a vendor. Other forms of plastic such as CPVC is better but the metal ones are far superior now that I have learned. If we ever have to change it I will use metal. However, if sunlight UV rays do not get to this PVC tank, it will last a long time and since we are using only 60PSI I am confident it will outlast me.

Clippard has a bigger plastic tank as well, AVT-PP-35. This one's fairly inexpensive, has push-connect fittings built in. Rated 125psi.

As to compressors, I wonder how well an automotive air ride compressor would work? I'd expect it to be longer-lasting and quieter than a tire inflator.

If you are looking for a economical solution for an out of sight, out of scale air tank, try using an emptied propane bottle. Most have a removable 10-32 thread fitting which can be replaced with appropriate fittings from clippard. The guys at Mill Creek have been doing it for years. The only down side is there is no drain. Could always put one inline though.

Back to the original thread... Your steam brake system on your mogul can be made to work very well. All you need to do is equalize the break beams. Its a hand full of parts that you could do in a day or two. The lap valve is inneffective for steam though. I fixed my brake on my Allen 10 and can gracefully stop 5-6 cars on 2.5% at MCC.

I believe Bill S has posted or offered drawings for
the equalized brake gear on the Allen ten wheeler.

Other Allen locos should be easy to do.

You can find them here for my 2-8-0

adding or subtracting an axle is easy.
Too many things going on to bother listing them.

I wrote up the equalized brakes for the Allen 10-wheeler and Mogul many years ago. If anyone wants a copy, just email me at gregl@mail.fresnostate.edu and I'll send along the pix and drawings.
