Urgently Help needed concerning J 611

Post by Steamchris »

Hello,

Guys, i need some help!
From April till May , me and my fresh married wife will come over to the USA for Hooneymoons.
Mayby you know that im building the J 611 , Report on this Board .
A visit in Roanoke is planed for May 1st to 4th 2018.
I tried to contact the VMT , to find out where the J will be during our time in Roanoke VA.
They just send me the Timetable of 2018. Look, if its possible i will come close to make pictures
and stuff without time pressure. I have just that one Chance , mayby for the rest of my life.
I am so worried about to come over and cant touch the J 611.
Mayby someone can help me out im really looking forward to your answer.

All the best and regards
Chris

they show 611 leaving Washington Union Station in Washington D.C. May 4 at 10:00 A.M. as the Savannah Rambler southbound, $349,00 fare. On May 6 2018 Savannah Rambler leaves Amtrak station in Savannah Georgia northbound. Will look for further information. Could you check timetable to see if the event/excursion trains are listed? nabob

now the trips listed are listed as pulled by Amtrak, not 611. Suspect there has been some concerns about the relationship between railroad and VMT. Expect some more news later. nabob

The North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC is about a 2.5 hour drive south of Roanoke. I assume you are mostly interested in seeing the 611 and taking photos, as opposed to riding on a train pulled by the locomotive. Perhaps its operating schedule will become clearer in a month or two (?)

Sounds like the May trips they have scheduled are fundraisers to fund more maintenance for 611.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your answers.

@Fender

yes you're right i wont drive with the J, i want to make pictures and stuff for my model.
I just stay these four Days in Roanoke, i have the option to drive to spencer by car. But need to know for sure that she is really there. Im so worried about that the J will be in a railyard which i cant enter .....that will be the worst case.
I hope someone knows exactly where the J will at the time May 1st to 4th 2018.

Kind Regards
Chris

There is a good chance is the 611 is in Spencer for the spring. the museum may do a hands on throttle like they did last summer. I will let all know as I find out more on the 611s future Michael

Hello Chris. I know a man by the name of Dick Cudd who is an actual member of number 611 official engine crew. his email address is rcudd@verizon.net. He would like you to contact him and he would be more than willing to try and help you out. Best of luck.

Hi Guys,

back in good old Germany, our journey was awesome!!!
We met so many lovely People there, the Time of our Life.
We saw so many interessting things, between NewYork and Key West. My Highlight was the visit in Spencer and touching the J, what a locomotive!!!
Also visting the O Winston Link Museum and the VMT was a plessure. The A and the Y6a in Roanoke, oh my God how big they are. Another Highlight was the visit at Duncan Herrings Railroad. Je invited us to stay over Night, we had a great time together, some beer and BBQ and of course watching his outstanding Locos!!!

Some Pictures...
