A 1" micrometer. It's the most used tool I have.

I think that my medium ball-peen hammer is the tool I use most often.

Philosophically speaking, it is desire.
Measuring and marking tools are next.
Cutting tools are up there too.
1) Ya gotta want something
2) Ya gotta know how big
3) Ya gotta cut it out of something.

I suppose the tool I use most is just a basic 6" vernier caliper.
I guess my dominant use of my vernier calipers and Harold's dominant use of his 1" micrometer reflects our respective need for accuracy...
It's also the tool I lose the most, and spend the most time looking for.
I can lose my verniers while working at the lathe, without moving my feet.
They have to be within arm's length somewhere...
But I spend at least an equal amount of time searching for my glasses. Even though I have 6 pairs strewn about to make it easier.

So most important tools; calipers and glasses.

That's my most used measuring instrument.

My solution to this is to always put things back in the correct place. As a result I can spend twenty minutes pawing through the correct drawer before noticing that the calipers are right there on the end of the mill table. When they are in with the drill bits I won't find them until tomorrow (then I can blame the woodchucks, though).

Yes. How can I find my glasses without my glasses?

Dollar Tree sells reading glasses for a dollar. I buy 5 pairs at a time.

Reading glasses aren't real useful when you are nearsighted.

That's too bad. Those $1 reading glasses are a godsend for the rest of us.

What tools should I have?
When I was young I could not afford the tools I needed to accomplish the things my young mind could think to do. As a result, the work was poor, sometimes just patched or rigged to work and so on.

As I grew older I began to buy tools that I need to perform a certain task. I bought a good tool even back then because I knew the value of tools and I knew to take care of whatever tools I was able to purchase.

Year by year I acquired more and more tools and the obvious result was that my work got better, I was able to accomplish task safer and easier because I had acquired the "proper" tool to do the work.

Today my wife will tell you "it's all about the tools" because we have been married long enough for her to know that the right tool makes the job easier!

At my age I can use all the "easier" I can get. Properly translated that means "more tools"!

I do have a lot of tools. My quest is to see what tool I don't have that I should have. I'm thinking a set of gage blocks might come in handy, but not something I would be using all the time. My 6" rule is always with me and also my Mitutoyo 6" digital caliber. I know there is something I must gotta have, but I can't think of what it is at the moment. Maybe I have everything I need.
