Machinist Jacks don't have to be big, nor made of steel (cast or otherwise). I made a few of these for supporting delicate parts that hung out of the end of my rotary table when I was doing making some cuts on the top of the part. This one in particular has a thrust bearing under the top plate so I can dial it up with my fingers without it shifting.

Thanks. You've just added something else to the list of projects I need to do because I just HAVE to have some of those.

Make that two of us need/wanting to build some of those. :-) The thrust bearing is a nice touch and great idea.

Have one? Better make a pair. The money is all in the first part.

RSG and/or Steve:
Looks like you have hit on a cottage industry.
Send a cut sheet when you get it off the ground. I'd be interested.
