Machinist Jacks don't have to be big, nor made of steel (cast or otherwise). I made a few of these for supporting delicate parts that hung out of the end of my rotary table when I was doing making some cuts on the top of the part. This one in particular has a thrust bearing under the top plate so I can dial it up with my fingers without it shifting.

Make that two of us need/wanting to build some of those. The thrust bearing is a nice touch and great idea.
