LALS 8mm movie from the mid 60's
LALS 8mm movie from the mid 60's
This is a film my dad took well before I came along and right about the time he started on his LE Pacific, thought the folks here might enjoy it. He passed away in 2017 and I have the engine now. Planning on moving out of CA to AZ then building a railroad around the house. Also, he had started on a Western Maryland Shay #6 that I will complete. He didn't get very far with it because work always got in the way but the last thing he worked on was the shay.

Great video! A nice time machine... fun to recognize locations from what they looked like in the early days. Nice Pacific too... good luck with the move.

I do have more, just haven't uploaded it yet. Also on my channel is a video from the 1989 meet there. We used to live in Santa Ana so we frequently went to LA or Riverside (my favorite because steam only hehe) with his Pacific. I'm hoping by this time next year, I'll have at least a simple loop done to get things in motion again.

Great vid. I used to ride my bike out there and sit and watch the action. I think the guy in the second sequence at 0:27 is named Frank Mann if what's left of my memory is working. He was quite the runner — had more fun than the kids did. When they expanded from the small oval to the large one it was quite a big deal.

When did the track expansion happen? I had been going there since I was a baby (born in '78) till 1990 when we moved north. Got quite a few miles under my belt there running the engine.

Since the Disney Loop is in operation, the film is from no earlier than 1966. The eastern expansion was begun in late 1980 with the golden Spike ceremony held at the 1981 Spring Meet. The construction of the western expansion began shortly after the Spring 1981 meet with it's Golden Spike ceremony held at 1984 Spring Meet.

Yes, that is Frank Mann at 0:27 running his Mikado. Looks like Doug Alkire is also in the film.... running his B&O Pacific.

Great info, thanks. My parents moved from Canada to California in late '65 early '66. One of the guys towards the end of the film looks like he could be the father of a friend of mine, does the last name of Pergande ring a bell to anyone?

I put down the wrong date for the start of the eastern expansion. (Long day, late night.) Construction began in late 1979 and we poured the concrete pad for the driveway entrance gate and mainline crossing in January 1980. That was the first project for the eastern expansion,.... I was one of those who worked building the pad. If you look at one of it's corners, you'll find a bronze 1980 IBLS belt buckle that the meet chairman, Glenn Anderson, placed into the concrete as we were finishing the smoothing to serve as a "builders plate."
