Harold put an amazing amount of effort into a series of threads in this forum that comprise a tutorial on tool grinding. These tutorials emphasize use of a chip breaker to improve HSS tool performance in the home shop but also cover details like grinder RPM and which wheels work best for HSS.

I found the series very informative so I extracted Harold's writing from the threads to a single large file and included the pictures as well as some of the questions and answers in these threads. I then asked Harold about sharing this file and he had no objections. I suppose there could be copyright questions but it seems as if sharing it here in the originating forum should avoid this as an issue.

Those interested can find the 11mb rtf file here:

Thanks much. I've read, and then reread those posts several times and always learn something new. Before Harold's posts, my HSS tools were marginal at best, and I tended to prefer brazed or inserted tools. Now I prefer hand ground HSS (even on my POS grinder and belt sanders) by a considerable margin and use commercial tools (carbide or otherwise) only in very limited scenarios (CI, hardened, etc.). Much thanks to Harold for the posts and John for the compilation!

John--

Thank you so much!

Tool grinding is a mystery to newbies like me. I bought a $400 DVD/TV player for my shop just to watch a graver grinding video! (It was a good investment, because now I can watch other instructional videos in the shop.)

Harold's tool grinding file will be invaluable to me.

Thank you, again.

When I go to the link, the ID shows but there is no facility to download.
What is the trick?
What am I missing?

In my case, the download facility window came up but behind rather than in front of the active window so I nearly missed it. But then, I'm on a Mac so may be different for you. - Gerry

Hi Mauro,

When you go to http://www.savefile.com/files/915454 you should see something similar to the following:

Image

This image is from Firefox (running under XP) with ad blocking enabled -- you may see ads but it should be very similar to this.

What computer, OS, and browser are you using?

John,
I can only echo the above sentiments.

Thanks,
