A requiem for PVs?

One year ago tonight (30 Mar 17), I was riding a charter on the tail of #6 consisting of California Zephyr veterans Silver Lariat, Silver Rapids and Silver Solarium. I originally hesitated as the tickets were not cheap, but since I had always wanted to ride Silver Solarium, I figured what the heck. ...

Continuing on last night’s theme …. Don’t worry SP fans, I like to spin yall up as the 4449 scheme every now and then. It is all in good fun. As to what paint scheme that is appropriate for 4449, I remember talking to Doyle at the Cathedral that was the Brooklyn Roundhouse a day or two before the Be...

March 23, 2002

On this day, 23 Mar 2002, a very special thing happened in the railfan world. The colors of the American Freedom Train returned to the rails on an overnight Portland-Bend round trip. For those of you that aren’t aware, it was a different time back then. The nation was still reeling from the impact o...

Re: D&S Winter Photo Special

You could not have gotten it better. It looks just like I imagine it would look if I were standing right there. I have no clue how people can get shots like that. Mark D. Thank you Mark & Fitz! It is actually quite easy. D&S only sells about 25 tickets or so to the night shoots, making it e...

D&S Winter Photo Special

Once again, attended the 14th annual Durango & Silverton Winter Photographer's Special. The night shoot was exceptional, even though it was hard to work around the provided lighting and the mercury vapor lighting, but isn't that what photography is all about? #473 is a usual participant the last...

Re: Steam & Snow

I don't think this is calendar material, but these were the conditions in the Animas River Canyon on the Durango & Silverton on 19 Feb 2017. Have I mentioned how cold it was?

It says "America's Railroad Salutes our Veterans". Below that are campaign ribbons from various conflicts that we have been involved in.

Amtrak 42

While I fully understand that #42 is not a heritage unit in the strictest definition of the term, I still think it is a pretty good looking locomotive. Maybe the fact is that I’m a US Navy veteran, I don’t know. I have several “special” units on my HO layout and #42 is one of them. West Quincy Misso...

Steam & Snow

As I’ve said before, there is nothing like steam and snow. The weather can be a real pain, especially when it is snowing hard. And the wind is blowing. And the thermometer is saying “I’m outta here!”, but still I go out in it in search for the shot. At Tacoma Colorado on the Durango & Silverton,...

Re: 70 years ago today - Where Nature Smiles 300 Miles

Mark,

I took the picture in Charles City Iowa on 21 Jul 2015. The car is owned by a good friend of mine; his hope is to restore the car for charter service. It is a slow, expensive process. He is determined and I am hopeful!

70 years ago today - Where Nature Smiles 300 Miles

I see by the ol’ calendar on the wall that it was on this date in 1947 that the re-equipped Twin Cities Zephyrs were placed in service for the run from Chicago to the Twin Cities, much of it along the line “where nature smiles 300 miles”. Attached is a photo of “Silver View”, one of the TCZ tail car...
