Re: How Fast?

I have seen several different claims, most of which are unsubstantiated, of speeds over 120 MPH. Back in the days when there were no limits on some segments of railroads, engineers would try to make up "behind schedule" by speeding. Can't come up with a true answer for you.

Re: On the Choo Choo tonight and tomorrow night

Good for you, Mark. It's probably about time Steve let you know how he feels about the job you do. When the engine runs, few riders know of the work the hostler has done to keep the locomotive ready for the engineer and fireman to take over and run it. When in this post, when the engine ran a short ...

Re: Amtrak In The Street, 1993

Tony, that video looks like one of mine from back when I video'd trains, walking down the street with the camera on to get to the next position. Did you film that? If it was in '93 does Amtrak still do street running there?

Thanks for identifying that wreck. I knew I had seen it in print somewhere but couldn't remember where. Any news on the clean up?

Re: Of Topic but Those Who Like Railroading Usually Like Airplanes

I am not familiar with the details of the B-17 cockpit. I hope there is not a single fuel On-Off control for all four engines. I know they have single controls otherwise they couldn't shut down a single one. You can get pretty far in a light airplane with the fuel shut off, I know, I have done it.

Re: Of Topic but Those Who Like Railroading Usually Like Airplanes

Mark, when I saw the TV coverage I questioned the "dreaded three engine approach" thing. Should have been no problem at all with three of the four functioning. Very young pilots with very little training brought B-17s back from bomb runs over Germany, all shot up and many with one or more ...

Re: 261 Pulls Gourmet express on the former Milwaukee Road

I'm glad I had the opportunity to be a steam fan for the last 28 years, and have been fortunate enough to have the means and the desire to find, travel with, photograph, sometimes volunteer and just enjoy mainline operations with 4449, 3751, 261, 700, 1225, 765 and others, and have had the great ple...

Re: Terms

This is somewhat off topic, but Mark, do you have to buy vacuum tubes for the old radios? I remember getting my grandfather's radio working and seems like 6BG6's were tubes I had to buy. Does anyone manufacture them anymore?

Re: Terms

Well said, John. You do have the words. Some of us still act as we did many years ago and treat people with respect, but lately it has become very disturbing seeing how people act. What do they get out of that type of behavior?

Re: Terms

Those kinds of criticism are getting more and more common on those other rail sites. Some people seem to have to challenge anything that is posted.
