Re: I've been hijacked to work

Hey, they're lucky to have you Mark. It's very easy to forget how long you've been at this. A humbling amount of time at this point... my hat's always off to ya. :?

Durango & Silverton #18 - Blown Piston (video link)

For those who haven't seen it, (I'd only heard about it), a camera was apparently rolling when #18 blew its piston and part of the head. The failure is at 35 minutes 16 seconds. After it comes to a stop the camera person heads to the front of the engine and you get to see shots of the locomotive's b...

Re: Big Boy Excursion Tickets Are Available, And They Ain't Cheap

I've a feeling these prices are due to it being the inaugural run. Can't prove it, though.

Let's see if they drop after May is done. Or even just start of the steam season next year. And not to say they'll still be reasonable, just more reasonable than they are now.

Re: Replacing locomotive tires without a fire ring...

...which is where the steam operation itself is for locomotive 107, I believe. Alberta. Bit far from Minneapois, Mark, about 1,300 miles...has the 261 group outsourced work on the engine that far away? (I ask bc I genuinely don't know)

Replacing locomotive tires without a fire ring...

I've actually never seen this method before. Anyone know how long this has been a practice? I can't imagine it not being at least turn-of-the-20th-Century, but I've been wrong before. Just found it really interesting. Heating the locomotive tire using electrical induction. Full youtube link below. E...

U.P. 2019 Steam Schedule Released

In case anyone hasn't seen it yet.

https://www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule/index.htm

Suspect more destinations will be added to the itinerary as the year goes on, as this trip doesn't quite add up to 11,000 miles (I don't think). ;)

Frisco 1522... for those that remember...

I can't actually remember what the reasoning was that this engine was put back into retirement. I just remember it was 2002 some time after the BNSF EAS in Texas. Wiki says 'due to high insurance costs and flue failures'. Disclaimer: I'm not arguing at all that it should or should not have been reti...

Re: The lights seem to be on, but nobodys home

I'm around, just busy at work. I check the board at least once a day. Following the amazing amount of UP fans on the Official Union Pacific Steam Club Facebook page, wondering how or if safety education is going to play out for the undoubted massive mobs of new railfans who are going to come out to ...

Re: 4014 Schedule Article for 2019, Trains Magazine

The Union Pacific Steam Club Facebook page (an officially run page by UP), did a short video by Ed Dickens, announcing that the first hydrostatic tests of the boiler are underway. Whether it's ready for Ogden or not, the speed at which this has been done is nothing short of amazing.

Re: 4014 Schedule Article for 2019, Trains Magazine

John - Unknown on the boiler question. There has been no visible evidence coming out of Cheyenne. Last images I saw were of the boiler being re-attached to the front engine set, which was completed. Rear drivers were still not yet installed. Part of me still wonders this... some time back a person i...

4014 Schedule Article for 2019, Trains Magazine

http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2019/01/23-mid-february-for-ups-big-boy-4014-schedule-this-spring The article's a little vague, but the biggest draw I'm getting from this is that 4014 will tour the UP system after Ogden. I'm more curious when and where the break-in and test runs will start.
