Re: Looking for distributed steam engines on long trains

Well, that's great. Now can someone come up with a photograph showing it in action?

Looking for distributed steam engines on long trains

Exactly what the title says. I'm wondering if anyone has resources where by a good photograph of a very long train with distributed power. It has to be something that can be posted here.
Thanks for anything that works

I know I'll never get there, but I can read the Mpls. rag story about it. Thanks for posting it.

Re: PTC and Steam...why couldn't you??

Well put John. I mostly see it the way you see it. But there wouldn't be any problem with the locomotive or the stopping if the throttle was just cracked a bit to keep some steam moving. Since in an emergency an engineer isn't going to be setting the throttle precisely, there could be an air powered...

Re: PTC and Steam...why couldn't you??

However, in stopping a steam locomotive in an emergency mode, what would be wrong by dumping the air, and that's easy enough to do, but still keep some steam moving through the cylinders with the cocks open? That would keep them lubricated. It could be set up to do just that automatically. Automatic...

Re: PTC and Steam...why couldn't you??

Good post, John. I don't disagree with anything you say, and I learned a few things too. I'm only responding because you mentioned that you had never had to deal with Amtrak. Lucky you, if you had the need to deal with Amtrak in todays world. But in the past, in the '90's and back they were very eas...

Re: Tempting Fate On The Tracks

Looks to me like a cop of some stripe has just arrived on the scene. We human beings like to think we're so smart. Yeah, we can devise all sorts of things that no other animal can do. But we aren't so good at being able to sense danger until it's either almost too late (luck) or just a tad too late ...

Re: Of Topic but Those Who Like Railroading Usually Like Airplanes

The B-17 has as many tanks as engines. Each tank feeds an engine. However, there is a myriad of piping so that any tank can be used by any engine or all engines on one tank or any combination you can think of. That was done so that in war time if an engine were shot out and had to be shut down, the ...

Re: Of Topic but Those Who Like Railroading Usually Like Airplanes

I know, I read the same. However, without chemical analysis it would be difficult to tell if there was Jet-A mixed with 100LL. Jet is clear. 100LL is colored. That color would still show 100LL even if contaminated with Jet-A. Going the other way around, if a jet were filled with 100-LL it could stil...

Re: Of Topic but Those Who Like Railroading Usually Like Airplanes

Those B-17's could make it home easily on only two engines if they threw a bit of 'cargo' overboard. (Bombs, witch are usually all dropped before an engine or two might fail, usually to enemy fire. Those engines are actually very reliable as long as they're properly maintained and aren't shot up wit...

Of Topic but Those Who Like Railroading Usually Like Airplanes

I'd bet that everyone that comes into this forum knows what happened to that B-17 nine-o-nine a few days ago. The cause of the wreck has not yet been released, but I can tell you what I think and why. The take off was apparently normal until they started to climb out and the #4 engine started acting...

I didn't make it there either in the end. Wound up sick. Steve thinks I was just using that as an excuse. It wasn't fake. He'll realize that when I show up this coming Monday.

Re: PTC and Steam...why couldn't you??

I don't know how it was in the '80s, but Steve Sandberg had a great relationship with Amtrak until the top guy (I forget his name) retired and Delta Dick (former head of Delta Airlines) took over. Delta Dick is slowly winding down operations except for a few major routes. He has no time for anyone w...

Clean Up 261 This Wednesday and Saturday

Time to get the crap out of the firebox and smoke box and other items to be done. It has to be done so stuff doesn't corrode. However, soon the FRA will be coming for a light inspection. I'll be there Wednesday for sure, Saturday maybe depending on she who rules the gas money. Anyone who wants to ge...

Re: PTC and Steam...why couldn't you??

Actually even a small company, and it doesn't have to be a corporation, could get a product certified by the FRA. They don't care who makes it as long as it can perform properly in all the tests it has to go through. After that, it would have to undergo a trial in a real life exposure. If anything d...
