Re: Amtrak

Yep. I wish Amtrak would continue to operate. It does serve a good purpose. But the down side is that it is costing way more than what it brings in and at the same time are costing the host railroads money in delayed trains of their own. And it keeps getting worse. Sooner or later it's going to have...

Re: Over 50 people 'mowed' down by 'speeding' train

I read that it's an annual thing. In the past the organizers alerted the railroad. This year they didn't. Can't say why they didn't stop the train, but I can guess being that this is India. a) the crew wasn't watching out the cab. b) They told themselves this wasn't happening - remember there was no...

Re: Amtrak

Any regional or short line that would fit into the scheme would be that much less track to have to lay. Said railroads that owned their track would, and should, profit from the passenger service But by the time all that track was connected everything else could have changed. By then Amtrak might hav...

Re: Amtrak

I have used Amtrak only once. That was from the Twin Cities to Seattle and back a week later. It was reasonably on time both ways. But it isn't always that way. But again, the Amtrak trains do have a significant effect on the host railroads own traffic. And I do not see a way to make it better. Migh...

Re: Amtrak

All of what I wrote was only in a dream world. We cannot compare our rail infrastructure with just about any other country because of the sheer size of our country compared with the others. Most of the countries that have good rail service are about the size of anywhere from one to five of our state...

Amtrak

I do read railroad topics more than just at Chaski and a few other railroad discussion forums, so I do read quite a bit about Amtrak. Amtrak seems to do ok on short commuter type operations and even some routes of medium length. But when it gets to the very long distance trains such as the Empire Bu...

Re: MTM #328 is done

By the way, I wonder what happened to the two diesels that were used for that dinner train(?) They weren't in the best condition, but they did run. Only diesels, but still I would hope they weren't scrapped, which is probably what their fate probably was by my guess and the fact that I always expect...

Re: MTM #328 is done

Were the rails pulled up?
I recall when the dinner train stopped operating... Just shortly after we had repaired a couple of their cars that could no longer even roll. I don't know if Steve ever got paid for the work and wheels.

Re: MTM #328 is done

I agree with what you said, John. But one thing sticks in my mind that says they have trackage rights onto a spur somewhere along the Wisconsin border - in the Stillwater area. I've never been there, never seen it, but IIRC I was told this, so I could be way out in left field.

Re: First Steam Up - Westerm Maryland #1309 2-6-6-2

It appears from what I've read on this thread is that they don't have any worthwhile volunteers? There are people out there with the necessary skills who would do it for just the chance to work on a steam engine. That can speed up the time frame. It is a given that they likely don't have the machine...

Re: Skookum 2-4-4-2

I just LOVE it when people see a pile of scrap metal and in their minds know it can become what it once was for future generations to witness and enjoy. It's done with cars all the time, but railroad equipment? Pretty rare comparatively, and especially when it is a one of a kind.

Re: MTM #328 is done

I could be wrong, but I do believe 328 has been used in service in the past during the tenure of CN. In any case, the boiler is done and they have no plans to put it back in service.

Re: MTM #328 is done

There is almost nobody at MTM who cares a whit about operating steam. They have become all about diesel switchers, old fashioned street cars and broken down rail cars. I probably exaggerate, but I make the point. Also, if anyone wants to work on a steam engine the board of directors require so much ...
