Re: Chinese QJ's on the march this week end

I was under the impression that only one of them was roadworthy. But then I THINK I read somewhere that both are operational. Not sure either way. Also, I wonder where they're going to operate. I was also under the impression that the Iowa Interstate, or whatever it's called, didn't want them operat...

Chinese QJ's on the march this week end

This week at least one QJ and maybe two will be chugging down tracks in Iowa. That's all I know about it. If someone can find more information, I'd like to know. Years back I hostled both of them at night at the same time and fired one of them (I forget the numbers) on the road for a couple hours. T...

Re: Soo Line 2719 May Be Returning To Wisconsin

And that might just be what the groupthink in the city council got into. One person wants to 'love it to death' and the others follow suit. All I can say about the engine is, Good luck in your new digs - you're going to need it. But what is the big deal on this engine and Eau Claire, WI? Is there so...

Re: Soo Line 2719 May Be Returning To Wisconsin

And there might be another take on this. Let's just think about how governments operate. They do what they can to get money from whatever source. Just maybe they're attempting to get the LSRM into a position to want to buy it. But if that's the case, I'll bet money it won't happen. Mark D.

Re: Soo Line 2719 May Be Returning To Wisconsin

Not only is their optimistic thoughts about how cheap it is to move the engine, they need to find a railroad willing to drag it back to Eau Claire. If I read it right, it is now not serviceable until the boiler goes through the big inspection. So it can't run on its own and about the only other way ...

Re: Soo Line 2719 May Be Returning To Wisconsin

If that's the case, and it seems plausible, they'll find there are few takers for an old steam locomotive that has to be moved at high cost. If they do take it back with that idea, the idea will most likely fail and they'll then offer it to the scrappers. And just as likely they will also refuse to ...

Re: Non Lifting Injectors

Correct on all counts. But That's what came with the engine after the Milw. Rd. was done with it. Seems to work well. The one I worked on is 10,000 gal. rated. The other is only 7,000 gal rated. Both work very well, not difficult to prime at all.

Re: Non Lifting Injectors

Thanks, Fitz, but actually there are a lot of people with whatever skills I have and far away better than I. I'd place myself a middle of the lineup. Having the proper tools makes things go better. I was supposed to remove washout plugs but the tool to knock them loose was nowhere to be found. Every...

Non Lifting Injectors

Non lifting water injectors are often found on steam locomotives. In the case I am talking about the locomotive has two of them. Often, later steam locomotives had all sorts of gimmick’s to try to increase efficiency. I don’t think the non-lifting water injector is among those devices. It is, howeve...

What is interesting is that I thought they were scrapping all steam.
Someone must have had a change of heart. Happy to know it's still around.

Re: Bad Luck Strikes UP's Frontier Days Excursion

Here is a link to the 844 going into emergency after the fact. Draw your own conclusions, but to me the sight of it stopping as it did and knowing why, it draws out some emotion, most especially for the crew.

Re: Twin Cities & Western Says "No" To Southwest LRT Deal

The county will never see that. In truth, our little trips on the TC&W don't do anything for local businesses along the line. We run a trip from our shop to wherever Steve decides we will reverse back to the shop. Back at the shop the people get back in their cars and drive home.

Re: Bad Luck Strikes UP's Frontier Days Excursion

Don't take what FB posters post on topics such as this. Unless they can convince you that they were in the cab or were near the ROW and saw it happen, they don't know anything more about it than you or I. So far the 261 crew has been lucky. No hits. We had a very narrow escape back in 1999 or 2000 -...

Re: Bad Luck Strikes UP's Frontier Days Excursion

Not good at all! I'm wondering why they took the steam engine off and substituted a diesel. I seriously doubt the steam engine was damaged. Potential crew traumatized however.
If more comes up I would like to know. Second worst thing a steam excursion train could have happen.
