Re: Chesapeake and Ohio #1309 Is Now In Limbo

Money that was donated explicitly for 1309 was spent for additional rolling stock and other unneeded items, they hired contractors to do the work that the volunteers could have done and other stupid actions. Many people who donated money for this project are rightfully quite agitated at where the mo...

Polar Express Needs Help !

We're short of people to host in the passenger cars for the Polar Express trips. Trips are about 8 seconds long - Well, a bit longer than that. If anyone who lives in this area, and you know who you are, or you know someone who can help out, please contact Jim (AKA D-rock) at jderocher261@yahoo.com ...

Re: Tough Time Finding Studs

Charles, thanks for the search tips. We ordered four studs to be sure they will work. Yesterday I installed all four. I cut about 4 threads off one end of each stud and installed them roughly in four corners of a round pattern of ten studs. It appears they will work very well and I'm sure we will ha...

Re: Tough Time Finding Studs

Four of them have been ordered. Hope they arrive before Thursday so I can install them and see how well they work out. If they work out, the idea is to get enough to replace all of the old studs. Thanks for the tip Robert. I spent hours on the internet looking for exactly what you pointed me to and ...

Re: Tough Time Finding Studs

Robert, that does help. I have the current MSC Industrial Supply catalog but did not find anything that even resembled a stud even remotely similar to what I would need. I haven't used the link you provided yet, but it might be exactly what I need. I do need to have a blank space in the center of th...

Re: Tough Time Finding Studs

I'm concerned that running a pin through with the intent to use a threading die to create a 7/8 X 9 thread that the stress would shear the pin. I also don't want a hole in the finished part, so it would be longer on both ends so I can thread each end. I've had some success (luck) with jammed nuts. S...

Re: Tough Time Finding Studs

Charles, when you did that did you use a 4 jaw chuck? My crappy little lathe only has a 3 jaw, do the pin would only go out one side. Maybe that's how you did it?

Re: Tough Time Finding Studs

Good idea, but I think what I'll do is cut the long thread first, then turn it around with two nuts jammed together and chuck it up on the nuts. It takes just a bit of tweaking to get two nuts to jam together with the flats aligned. I think it will go faster that way. Now is when I miss my screw mac...

Tough Time Finding Studs

So, the studs that hold the cover plates on the valve cages have been used up after over 70 years of having the nuts unscrewed and screwed back on again. The threads have been over stressed enough times that they have lost their shape and look more like shark teeth from a cross sectional view. That ...

Re: Off topic - Go To Roundhouse

Brodix blocks and heads. I think we should discuss this in the roundhouse lest I get in trouble.

Twin engines, #2 on the dyno

This is the very first pull on this engine, before tuning. It had idled at about 1500 RPM for maybe five minutes, then loaded at about 2500 for a short bit, and then the decision was made to run the first graphing pull. It was only run to 5000 RPM. When in the boat it will be limited by a rev limite...

Off topic - Go To Roundhouse

Last week I was in Menahga, MN. to help my son with his creation of twins. Two identical engines for a 30' 'GO FAST' boat. Kind of like a Donzi or whatever. The engines in it were supposed to be rebuilt, but they were so badly used up that even the blocks couldn't be salvaged. What you see if you ca...

OH! Now THAT is the best photo of the whole bunch... Not to denigrate the others. That last one is a calendar shot in my own view.
I love it!

Re: What's Up With $OO Line 2816?

Thanks. I know about 1003 being in operation and was in Chicago, AND THAT'S where I got the curiosity about 2816 - I knew it had been retired, but couldn't place the number simply because I hadn't heard of it for so long that I just totally forgot where I had known that engine. Canadian Pacific owns...

Re: What's Up With $OO Line 2816?

So, then where is the 2816? I had thought it was somewhere in Wisconsin, but I might be mixing it up with 1003. I call it $OO Line because much of their advertising when they were in business was $OO Line. Or, more correctly $OO LINE.
