Re: Great Northern 2523

I am pretty sure I saw that engine on its last run on the way to Willmar. I cannot recall the year, but steam was long since gone. Yet, as I and my whole family were heading west on U.S. hwy. 12 between (I'm pretty sure) Darwin and Litchfield on the way to my grandparents' cabin on Green Lake near S...

Private Message?

Just wondering if someone sent me a PM. It says I have a private message, yet there is nothing new to be found.

Re: Great Northern 2523

I don't get what you mean by NOW on display. IIRC, it's been on display since the early '60s at least. I see it's under a roof.

Re: Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 #261 trips

Since this time is advertising gourmet it will be at least a couple level higher in quality from the standard fare that is normally served. However, anyone who has been on one of our trips might say that the quality and service is normally close to gourmet. I suspect that as normal the food served i...

Re: Soo Line 2719 May Be Returning To Wisconsin

I don't understand why Eau Claire would want it back. I'm wondering if it isn't something to do with "It was ours, they have it and we don't and we should get some money out of this somehow." They don't realize that its only value is the scrap value because steam locomotives, as rare as th...

Re: Soo Line 2719 May Be Returning To Wisconsin

I had to chuckle a bit on the last paragraph of the article where the Duluth people say that they had intended to restore the 2719 to operation after their 28 runs out of time. What? So they have two locomotives that need to go through the FRA mandated boiler inspection. If they're going to go throu...

Re: Soo Line 2719 May Be Returning To Wisconsin

I haven't kept up with that engine. Last I knew wasn't it the one that the crew didn't properly tie down before they left it on a siding from which it slowly rolled down to the switch, which caused interference on the main and ultimately got whacked by a WC train? Did that not then cause it to be ba...

Re: 2926 Derailment On Eve of First Steam Up

When I stopped in there back in 2015 they said they do have an agreement with BNSF on some trackage that is supposedly in good enough shape for their steam engine and consist to operate on. I was told where, but I didn't have a note pad and didn't recognize the name/s in the area so I can't say just...

Re: 2926 Derailment On Eve of First Steam Up

Thinking about this a little I know the track was rebuilt something like 5 years ago so I am sure the track is solid. Gage rods, they are not called bars, will probably do little to help since they offer little to no protection from a rail turning over. I wonder it they opened up the track gage hal...

Re: UP tracks

Thank you all for the information. I was wondering if it happened during the restoration to operation. Being that was done in 1990 it appears that it was done for that reason.

Re: 2926 Derailment On Eve of First Steam Up

I get that it was loaded this time. Understood. But they are going to have to do something to beef up the rail over the pit if they plan on continuing to move it in and out of the barn while it is in service. I doubt they want this to happen again and the way to stop it from happening is to beef up ...

Re: 2926 Derailment On Eve of First Steam Up

I recently read that the cause of the mess was a broken weld. A single weld! That tells me they really need to beef up their support structure on the rails over the pit.
That, or don't put that engine over the pit.
