Recent Amtrak/CSX tradegy in South Carolina

On CBS 60 Minutes the conductor was lamenting his firing by CSX. The engineer was fired too.
The conductor said it was the responsibility of the engineer to re-align the switch and he was
assured this was done. Aside from PTC shouldn't this have been prevented somehow?

Explosive packets

Guys,
A friend from Mexico tells me rail personnel in Mexico place thin explosive packets on rails
that explode on wheel contact. Anyone ever hear of this practice? For what purpose?

Re: Amtrak

Guys, Thanks for your posts about Amtrak and the Empire Builder. I've ridden the Empire Builder three times from Portland to Whitefish, Montana (visit daughter) without a hitch. I've read about not keeping schedules due to your remarks about freight traffic and such. Every time I book the train I'm ...

Be the Engineer

Guys,
The Nevada Northern Railway out of Ely, Nevada offers a hands on throttle experience
controlling a steam locomotive running on their mainline. Might be a neat experience.
But I suspect some of you have already done something similar?

Re: UP tracks

Guys,
Nice posts. Can 4014 travel on all tracks and bridges due to its weight?

Guys,
Since Amtrak uses BNSF tracks (Chicago-Seattle) would PTC be operational now on Amtrak?

California's "Boondoggle Train to Nowhere."

Guys, Europe, China and Japan operate successful hi-speed trains. Why not the U.S.? Fox News reports California's bullet train is over budget by billions and seven years behind schedule. A source said ridership is fictional and the idea lacks logic because air traffic is faster. And If its up and ru...
