Good for you, Al. I loved volunteering, but am now unable, so can sympathize with you.

Re: Choo-Choo time in Minnesota Last Weekend

Mark, after seeing photos of 261 out on the road, I was wondering if you crewed the trips. No rest for the hostler, eh? Interesting story about the boy, and I'm with you as to "Does he have parents and do they care?" It is interesting that he first of all knows about the 261 and second of ...

Re: Big Boy IS going to Duluth this July

Steam locomotives, and particularly the articulateds, are masterpieces of engineering. I have heard people say that the steam locomotive is the closest thing to a living creature that man has created, and they certainly are, with all of the different systems which work together much like our human b...

Re: A Well Written Story of the Restoration of a Big Boy

Mark, definitely well written. We railfans have been subjected to the controversy between different factions about this restoration. This article is free from any preference for either side. Bottom line being the engine WAS restored, has run, and is scheduled for a lot more trips. A very real accomp...

Re: Steve Lee and 4014.

Steve works with John Rimmasch (SP) basically across the street from the Cheyenne UP operations. I'm sure he is aware of what is transpiring there, but from what I have seen elsewhere, there is no love lost between Ed and Steve. I just hope that the 4014 will indeed run after all that went through g...

UP almost always has their steamers pull canteen cars, especially on long trips.

Re: Skookum at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

Mark, I have no first hand information, but do know that the last rod that had a problem was an eccentric rod. Don't know which one of the four of them it was. When it first ran it had a rod problem but I don't know anything about that one. The engine had not run in years. I'm guessing a friction pr...

Re: Skookum at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

Super photos, Kevin. Another lament on my part, being immobile I can't even get up to the OCSR, 90 miles away. Sure wish I could have participated in this venture, to meet you and several other folks who do not often visit that favorite place of mine, and whose photography and prose I admire.

Re: Lights are on, but nobody's home

Mark, you are right about the lack of training. That accident in San Francisco a few years ago was a classic case of pilots really didn't know how to fly the airplane.

Re: Lights are on, but nobody's home

Charles, to me, it means if you measure twice you will be sure that your measurement is correct. IF the first two differ, do it again. Do NOT cut until you are sure that your measurement is correct. That philosophy had to apply to just about everything we did in the flight test business, otherwise p...

Skookum is operational

Martin Hansen just published a group of photos of Skookum, the rare 2-4-4-2 logging locomotive restored to operation at Oregon Coast Scenic railroad. With his permission, I will post a photo.

I am here, just returned from 12 days in Portland with no internet while my wife was in hospital. Her surgery was successful, but took a long time to recover.

Re: C&TS video on NatGeo

Mark, you should watch it. Joe Harper, who is a regular 261 rider, sent it to me. John Bush runs the Cumbres and Toltec, and their engines are coal fired. It is quite interesting about his history and what made him get involved.
