Great Northern 2523

Here are a few views of Great Northern 4-8-2 2523, on display at the county museum in Willmar, MN. She sure is some beauty.

Re: Soo Line 2719 May Be Returning To Wisconsin

I dunno what LSRM's rationale is, Mark. I do think Eau Claire is being really weird about this, though. Why can't they let the engine stay in a good home like LSRM? And what if 2719 comes back and falls into limbo due to a new mayor taking office or something? I'd hate to see 2719 fall into limbo li...

Re: Soo Line 2719 May Be Returning To Wisconsin

The latest: http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2018/06/27-wisconsin-city-approves-soo-line-2719-resolution (Article not behind paywall.) I first saw 2719 in action at Osceola, WI, twenty years ago, at "Steamfest In The Valley", an event which saw her, NP 328, and SOO 1003 all in operatio...

Soo Line 2719 May Be Returning To Wisconsin

(Article not behind paywall.)

Quite frankly, I do not see why Eau Claire does not completely relinquish control of this magnificent engine to the Lake Superior museum.

Re: Stone Arch Bridge Needs Repairs

Freight traffic (coal trains mostly?) used the bridge until 1982, four years after the last passenger train crossed in 1978.

Re: Stone Arch Bridge Needs Repairs

The bridge was technically closed in 1993 after the rails across the span were lifted in 1982. Someone with a wire cutter and the stealth of Steve McQueen from The Great Escape had cut a hole in the chain link fence on the bridge's eastern end by 1993, however. Through that portal, I and other adven...

Re: Stone Arch Bridge Needs Repairs

The State ponied up one million to keep the bridge open, but not the 13 million needed for extensive repair work. I hope this band aid solution does not lead to the loss of Mr. Hill's fine bridge, one I had the fun privilege of crossing before it was converted into a pedestrian bridge. Ah the feel o...

Southwest LRT Price Tag Keeps Increasing

https://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/news/2018/06/01/hennepin-county-oks-more-cash-for-southwest-lrt.html Pity they cannot scrap this project and put the money to other transit projects. I used to think the Southwest LRT was a good idea, but the swelling costs, coupled with what I feel is unreali...

Re: U.P. Steam Shop 4014 Update 05/07/2018 (see last page)

The Spine runs through towns such as Albert Lea, Owatonna, and Faribault. North of Faribault, the Spine junctions with the old Milwaukee Road I & M Division, which it shares up to Rosemount, where the line diverges right to go to South St. Paul. There the Spine ends due to the Rock's swing bridg...

Re: U.P. Steam Shop 4014 Update 05/07/2018 (see last page)

The Spine Line was once the Rock Island's north-south route to the Twin Cities from Iowa. Purchased by the Chicago and North Western after the Rock's untimely demise, the Spine today is operated by the Union Pacific and has hosted UP 3985 in 2002 and 2008.

I won't be able to make Ogden either, but I am wondering if the Spine Line can support a Big Boy. 3985 could use the line, so why not 4014? :D I guess I will wait for the Big Boy to come to me rather than vice versa.

Re: 261 Trips to Duluth Cancelled Acount of Amtrak

Mark, I see your point. I admit I am rubbed pretty raw by all this nonsense, but on the flip side of the coin, plenty of people are speaking up to try and set things right.
