Re: 4014 trip delayed due to flooding

Jim Wrinn reports from Trains Magazine's Facebook page: "Looks like 10 am departure from North Platte for UP 4014."

Re: 4014 trip delayed due to flooding

They must have some "flex" built into their schedule, don't they?
Update Yes they do have "flex" in their schedule: their first event is not until July 13-14, giving them 48 hours leeway.
Weather is still a royal pain this year, but there is hope yet for the Big Boy.

There goes their schedule--or not? (Sigh) Curse this rainy weather.

Re: Moving Big Boy 4012

Well, Mark, they got 4012 to Scranton without incident. In fact, they even posed her atop the grand viaduct the Lackawanna built in Scranton before moving 4012 down into town. https://storage.googleapis.com/hippostcard/p/02e1cb89d39857877295aad00775f663.jpg Who would have guessed a Big Boy would eve...

Milwaukee 261 And Union Pacific 4012, Scranton, PA

When Milwaukee Road 261 visited Steamtown National Historic Site in 1995-96, she often passed by Big Boy 4012, like in this 1995 shot from railfan Ted Krug: http://s3.amazonaws.com/rrpa_photos/43654/img146.jpg If 4014 passes the 261 shop, and if, somehow, Steve and Company have 261 out to greet her,...

Moving Big Boy 4012

All this talk of 4014 and tight clearances reminded me of when they moved Big Boy 4012 from Bellows Falls, Vermont, when Steamtown USA moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania. Here are a few pics I found of that move, taken by railfan Carl Weber: http://s3.amazonaws.com/rrpa_photos/4326/111384BB.jpg http://...

Re: 4014 turning and bridge restrictions

There is also a wooden trestle north of Faribault on the Spine Line that is cause for concern too--unless the new diesels these days weigh the same as a Big Boy?

Re: 4014's Return And "The Circus That Wasn't"

Actually guys, I think I am worried about nothing. The Spine Line, unlike the U.P. in Echo Canyon, does not have a road closely paralleling it. The towns and the crossings in between will have folks out to see the Big Boy, especially Northfield, where the train will stop, but the odds of me getting ...

Re: Big Boy IS going to Duluth this July

Hey Mark,

On July 19, Union Pacific says 40104 will depart SPUD at 8:30 A.M. If they take the old Great Northern, that means the Big Boy will pass the 261 shop around 9 A.M. If they take the old Northern Pacific, though, they will bypass the shop. Does that make sense?

Re: Big Boy IS going to Duluth this July

Aw come on, Mark. What if the Big Boy passes the 261 shop on its way to Duluth? You guys would be foolish not have 261 simmering outside the shop, waiting to swap whistle salutes with the 4014.

Re: 4014's Return And "The Circus That Wasn't"

A good friend and fellow railfan gave me a dire warning when I enthusiastically told him my chase plans for July 17. He warned me that 4014 would be followed by so many people, including many yahoos, the train's passage would be "a circus." That made me nervous, man, but forewarned is fore...

4014's Return And "The Circus That Wasn't"

A good article about how well-behaved the crowds were for 4014's return to the rails: http://cs.trains.com/trn/b/observation-tower/archive/2019/05/24/the-circus-that-wasn-39-t-and-the-memories-that-were.aspx I hope the same holds true when 4014 hits the ol' Rock Island Spine Line next month. I do no...
