Re: Of Topic but Those Who Like Railroading Usually Like Airplanes

I know, I read the same. However, without chemical analysis it would be difficult to tell if there was Jet-A mixed with 100LL. Jet is clear. 100LL is colored. That color would still show 100LL even if contaminated with Jet-A. Going the other way around, if a jet were filled with 100-LL it could stil...

Re: Of Topic but Those Who Like Railroading Usually Like Airplanes

Those B-17's could make it home easily on only two engines if they threw a bit of 'cargo' overboard. (Bombs, witch are usually all dropped before an engine or two might fail, usually to enemy fire. Those engines are actually very reliable as long as they're properly maintained and aren't shot up wit...

Of Topic but Those Who Like Railroading Usually Like Airplanes

I'd bet that everyone that comes into this forum knows what happened to that B-17 nine-o-nine a few days ago. The cause of the wreck has not yet been released, but I can tell you what I think and why. The take off was apparently normal until they started to climb out and the #4 engine started acting...

Re: Clean Up 261 This Wednesday and Saturday

I didn't make it there either in the end. Wound up sick. Steve thinks I was just using that as an excuse. It wasn't fake. He'll realize that when I show up this coming Monday.

Re: PTC and Steam...why couldn't you??

I don't know how it was in the '80s, but Steve Sandberg had a great relationship with Amtrak until the top guy (I forget his name) retired and Delta Dick (former head of Delta Airlines) took over. Delta Dick is slowly winding down operations except for a few major routes. He has no time for anyone w...

Clean Up 261 This Wednesday and Saturday

Time to get the crap out of the firebox and smoke box and other items to be done. It has to be done so stuff doesn't corrode. However, soon the FRA will be coming for a light inspection. I'll be there Wednesday for sure, Saturday maybe depending on she who rules the gas money. Anyone who wants to ge...

Re: PTC and Steam...why couldn't you??

Actually even a small company, and it doesn't have to be a corporation, could get a product certified by the FRA. They don't care who makes it as long as it can perform properly in all the tests it has to go through. After that, it would have to undergo a trial in a real life exposure. If anything d...

That would be Loram. 261 Special, I think a Loram trip for their employees.

261 Rolls Once Again

Yep, same old same old ride on the former Milwaukee Road now TC&W. I didn't go. I just sat on the engine over Friday night and Saturday. Then I went home. I'm pretty sure they don't need me on the trip too, with all the others on the crew and we've all been down this same 25 (or something like t...

Re: Indiana Transportation Museum Equipment Auction

John, that almost seems just like the MTM in St. Paul, MN. (I think it's Saint Paul, hard to tell) They have all sorts of junk around there that just doesn't make sense. There's no 'theme' that I've ever seen. But sadly I would bet that's where the 261 will go when it's finally banned from all rails...

Re: Indiana Transportation Museum Equipment Auction

It's surely behind a pay wall from here! The rare Milwaukee Road F units might be scarce, but I do know that Steve Sandberg has a E unit, I think it is a E. Might be earlier than that. I can't tell one from the other. I see them as covered wagons. His potential E unit will probably be behind the tra...

Re: 261 Pulls Gourmet express on the former Milwaukee Road

I have to play mother to the 261 over night on 19th and 20th this week. I don't have information on when I start or when someone comes to relieve me. And since I don't want to hang around all day after being on the engine over night, I'll drive the 60 some miles home again between the two stints. Fu...

Re: 261 Pulls Gourmet express on the former Milwaukee Road

In truth, PTS isn't the steam world's first problem. Even PTCS (Positive Train Control Steam) were to become reality most main line steam engines still couldn't operate. The reason is that the railroad they operate on don't want to insure the steam operation. How did the 261 operate back in the day?...

Thanks, Tony! As soon as I can get a pdf program in this computer I'll print out the top one. The lower one is, to me, ??? But that's too far into the Cities for me anyway.

Re: The Minnesota Western Bridge Over The Crow

Tony, do you have knowledge about when the trail opened? Are bicycles welcome there? And, most of all, where it begins, and where it ends?
Thinking about taking my bike there
