Re: 2015 Wrap Up

#10 Having heard great reviews of the Tennessee Valley Railfest trips to Cleveland, TN, the decision was made to head to Chattanooga for this years trips. There was one shot I wanted near McDonald, TN. On September 13, we find the 4501 at speed with no diesel to be found. As it turned out, this woul...

Re: 2015 Wrap Up

#7 August found a group of steam charters running in Tennessee. On August 16, we were at the Three Rivers Rambler in Knoxville, TN with Southern 154 masquerading as long gone Tallulah Falls 78. Re: 2015 Wrap Up

#4 Another 611 picture, this time battling the Blue Ridge Grade coming out of Roanoke on June 3. Had a friend with me, and this shot was his first time seeing the restored engine at speed from lineside. Told him he might as well go home after we got this shot, and he agreed (although he didn’t, of c...

2015 Wrap Up

Time to round up 2015, and I figure the best way to do that is to go through some of the favorite photos from the year, 12 of them to be precise. #1 Fulfilling a dream, we find steam in the snow at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC. Visiting Lehigh Valley Coal Company 0-6-0T #1...

Re: Sharing photos on Flickr

Where is that tall trestle on page 1 with 611, and another train in a second photo, both from quite a distance away? Sounds the James River Bridge in Lynchburg, VA. There's a side view off the end of a street with some very friendly property owners. Several different angles you can shoot from---a p...

Re: So where the hexx is everybody?

No traffic here to speak of for the past few months. The lights seem to be on, but nobody home. Maybe everyone else has the same issue I have, nothing to say at this time. I haven't even been at the 261 shop for a couple of months. Too busy trying to wind down my small machine shop business. This l...

Re: Sharing photos on Flickr

Nice stuff. That late evening ride back into Minneapolis as darkness was approaching fast with steam running through the quiet zones and commuter stations was pretty surreal. Here's my stuff....https://www.flickr.com/photos/125446073@N02/. There's a fair bit that hasn't been posted anywhere else. Th...

Southern 4501 and N&W 611 at Walton, VA -- One Week Apart

Here's something you don't see too often. Two steam locomotives at the same place, one week apart. On June 28, 2015, Southern 4501 departs Walton, VA after turning on the wye on her way back to Radford and Bristol. One week later, on July 4, 2015, Norfolk & Western 611 arrives in Walton from Roa...

Very cool to see the 611 under steam on the mainline once more. Wasn’t sure if I would ever get the chance after watching the last car fade from view at Ridgecrest, NC on October 16, 1994. Very interesting times we live in.

Here's a shot from the previous day under clear skies with the 611 posing on the turntable at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, the former Southern Railway repair facility.

Cass Railfan Weekend 2015

On May 15-17, 2015, the annual Railfan Weekend was held at the Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass, WV. This year, Shay 4 was featured on a work train, and Heisler 6 pulled a freight on the West Virginia Central between Spruce and Cheat Bridge. Western Maryland Shay 6 was also steamed up, and participated ...

N&W 611 Test Run

On May 21, 2015, Norfolk & Western 611 took to the mainline for the first time since December 7, 1994 with a test run from Spencer to Greensboro, NC and return. The day started cloudy, devolved into rain, and then sun near the end of the trip. Here, the 611 shatters the silence in Thomasville, N...
