Re: Santa Fe 2926

As of right now, my biggest problem is what to do with all the stuff left in my shop after the auction. Too many people didn't bother to take what they have purchased, leaving me to figure out how to best get rid of it. I can see having to buy more gas for the torch so I can cut up the steel rack and haul it to the local scrap yard, for instance. Meanwhile, I spent the last day and a half doing the cleanup where an enormous old oak tree had to be cut down so a 'storage shed' can be put up. Truly, it took that much time for that tree and a boxelder tree. I took down four others and did the cleanup all in one day, but they were a bit smaller and didn't hang over the garage. Hanging over the garage was the reason to pay a contractor to take it down. That and the sheer size made cleanup difficult.
It all takes time. The main trunk of the oak was roughly 3 feet diameter and judging by the number of blocks I cut it up into, it would be around 35 feet before the first fork.
Would that wood could be burned in the 261 with reasonable results...

Thanks once again, Kevin. What is the function of that troublesome signal line?

Correction the open house is on the 26th.

If I remember right it is communication back to the air brake control line.
Nor absolutely sure though.

I just enjoy DOING. Never minded the long days too often seven days a week except that I haven't gotten much of anything else done over the decades. Only things that just HAD to be done, like head gaskets in my wife's car, or clearing snow... stuff I don't mind doing but that puts me behind in my work at work so that I have to work even longer days to make it up. I've done 24 hour days many times. Now that does get old!
Even going down to the 261 shop only once a week, and missing some weeks, put me behind and caused me to have to work both Saturday and Sunday to make up for it.
I've had enough of that.
Now I'm going to finally take the time for a road trip, and I am going to see that beautiful Santa Fe 2926 out in New Mexico, along with many other things. Wife wants to start out in April. We'll see about that. If 261 has any spring trips that will come first. If not, we can go anytime after the snow melts.

Thanks, Kevin. It is amazing how much more complete an engine looks once the cab is in place.

Yes, Kevin, those photo's are very nice. Things seem to be movig along pretty quickly now, judging by the recent photo's. Will it fire up sometime in the next six months? I'm betting so. (wit h myself, that is)

From the open house, a shot over the rods on the engineers side.

The open house went great, with 1700+ attending. The hit of the show was the valve gear running from forward to reverse, powered by the power reverse cylinder.

Kevin

Edit to answer the question.
My guess is three to six months to operation, we have to take care to do it right and not rush to the end.

That second sentence goes without saying. It is VERY true. From what I've seen in the photo's and heard from here and there, you guys are doing a very good job and will have a fine and reliable locomotive when it's completed. I am hoping to see it in person next spring.

You'll have to PM your direct contact so I can get in touch with you. I surely won't have internet access readily available while on the trip. Maybe now and then at a motel if they have it in the lobby or something.
