Saw it on the news the other night. Needs all the bricks tuck pointed and it'll cost like a zillion dollars, far more than the city of Minneapolis is likely willing to spend.
But then again, the city of Minneapolis is willing to spend anything and everything to have about eleventy five stadiums, so maybe if they put a roof on the bridge and call it a stadium it might get fixed. Otherwise, it'll be a pedestrian railroad bridge until they determine it's not safe - which won't be long. Then they'll knock it down at a cost approaching what it would cost to tuck point.
Heh, tell me I don't know how city governments work! (NOT)

Well, on the evening news the other night it was announced that our usually worthless governor has asked state legislators to approve money for repairs to the bridge.
We'll see what happens.

They had better fix the bridge, and while they were at it, how about including one track embedded in the pavement that is connected to the rusty track running down the Dinkytown trench to within sight of the bridge so special moves can be made onto the span for special events and other purposes? 261 on the Stone Arch for a photo session. Yeah! :D Reconnecting the bridge would help funding come available too.

The track idea will never fly. Nice pipe dream though.

I wish the idea could fly. I just missed seeing trains on the James J. Hill bridge. :(

The State ponied up one million to keep the bridge open, but not the 13 million needed for extensive repair work. I hope this band aid solution does not lead to the loss of Mr. Hill's fine bridge, one I had the fun privilege of crossing before it was converted into a pedestrian bridge. Ah the feel of the old track ballast under my shoes as I crossed the bridge in 1993, back when I was thirteen.

Was it still in use in 1993?

The bridge was technically closed in 1993 after the rails across the span were lifted in 1982. Someone with a wire cutter and the stealth of Steve McQueen from The Great Escape had cut a hole in the chain link fence on the bridge's eastern end by 1993, however. Through that portal, I and other adventurous people crossed the bridge before the trail came.

Do you know when the last train went over the bridge? Not including railroad equipment used to take up the track.

Freight traffic (coal trains mostly?) used the bridge until 1982, four years after the last passenger train crossed in 1978.

Thanks, Tony. I never knew anything about that bridge until the past few years when it has been in the news because of people on it everywhere. At the time I thought it was a new and expensive bridge that was built for pedestrians. Later I learned it was originally a railroad bridge. My thought then was, "What a shame - to take a perfectly good railroad bridge and use it for walkers and weird demonstrators.

Here is a photo of a Great Northern passenger train crossing the Stone Arch Bridge during the glory days of steam.

THAT is a way cool photograph! I wonder how he got that high angle, what building it might have been taken from, or was he in an airplane? We'll probably never know.
