This afternoon (Sunday) I ran across a very long you tube video showing lots of vapor coming from everything that is atop the boiler and parts below. It appears completely finished, cab doors on, pipes connected. They were building pressure but it wasn't quite there yet so the whistle sounded like a sick goose in the first part of the video. However, ten minutes or more into it and as the pressure (water hotter) the whistle began to sound like a real steam whistle.
I forgot to save it and now I Have spent half the day trying to find it again. If anyone already has that link, I would appreciate very much if you could post it. In the meanwhile, I'll keep on searching. I didn't count the time, but it is VERY long and the camera does not move appreciably during that whole segment. In this video it looks like it's about to head out on the high iron.
Also, the video takes place entirely on the engineers side, not the fireman's side. I've got that one. It doesn't show me what I want to see and hear.

Hey Mark...think you'll find the same video link in the separate thread I posted about the whistle.

This look familiar? Far as I know there was only one video camera rolling from the bridge when this happened. The first of many we're going to see the coming days,j I'm sure.

Yeah, that's it! Did you watch the whole thing? If you did, you would have heard how the low pressure/'wet' steam makes the whistle sound like a dying cow. As the video rolls on the whistle clears its throat and starts to sound like a steam whistle should sound.
I think that beast is just about ready to head out to Promontory Point, Utah.

I did notice the increased pitch as the video went on. Asked if that was rising boiler pressure. John Bohon made some comments on it.

Another thing I need (more like WANT) to know is when does the train head out to Ogden? I've read there is a fan trip earlier but I would like to know when they finally go to Utah. I haven't seen a solid date anywhere.

Re: Video 4014 outside appliances running whistle testing
Thanks, Robert. I looked it up last night when I had some time. It took at least four minutes. Leave May 4, arrive Ogden 5/9. Leaves Ogden 5/11 or 5/12 There is some question on which.
It's not like I'm going to be chasing the thing though. For me it's just idle curiosity.

Visually speaking....you can bet this will be one of the most well-documented rail events by railfans.
If not THE most.

I learned earlier this week that the whistle on the 4014 may be blown with superheated steam. if so and if the superheater units were full of water then all the water in the units would have to blow out before the whistle would blow properly.
