4014 to Duluth

Postby Kevin Gilliam » Fri Aug 09, 2019 1:32 pm

With the announcement that UP 4014 was making a trip to perhaps the least likely place one would expect to see it, plans were set in motion to follow the thing. One other benefit was that most of the days would have decent amounts of mileage with minimal layover stops.

We started out on the outskirts of Omaha at Crescent, Iowa.

Next, a small crossing outside of Missouri Valley.

The following morning, storm clouds cover the background as the 4014 heads out of Boone, IA.

After an overnight layover in Mason City, IA, Day 3 began just north of town. The Iowa Northern had their set of Rock Island Es out for viewing. I've also included a shot from the previous evening as a torrential line of storms gave way to some spectacular storm light.

Later that afternoon, 4014 pulls a small hill near Farmington en route to St. Paul.

After a layover day in St Paul, 4014 headed north to Duluth, over a route that 261 has operated on many times.

We'll begin with the Kettle River bridge near Sandstone.

North of Sandstone, we decided to avoid the service stop at Bruno by running up the interstate to Superior and backtracking back to the next location, settling on the Nemadji River bridge near Boyston. Apparently, that was the correct decision, as the 40-minute stop at Bruno wasn't long enough to let all the traffic file past, and I know of at least one chaser who didn't even get around the engine before the 4014 started moving again. They made it up here with a few minutes to spare, fortunately.

After several days of photos that haven't been edited yet, we see the 4014 back in St. Paul heading to Altoona, WI.

Some amount east of there, we got another photo at Knapp, WI. Some of the locals did some brushcutting here in advance of the move, opening up this beautiful scene.

An incredible amount of traffic both from the chase brigade and an accident on the interstate that sent even more people down the chase roads meant that Knapp ended up being our final view of the 4014. Still, it was an enjoyable trip, and great to see the 4014 a little bit closer to home. Stranger things have happened for sure, but seeing a Big Boy under steam in Duluth has to rank pretty high on the "this will never happen" scale. Kudos to all who made this one happen.

Kevin, you really put that together well. Thanks so much for sharing a few days of your live for the rest of us who couldn't be there.
And that goes for the others who have shared all things 4014 during the time it was in our area. I never got to see it, so it matters.

Kevin, may I use one of your photos to sent to Trainorders, actually to promote Chaski as an altenate site for great steam stuff?
