Chinese QJ's on the march this week end

Postby Mark D » Wed Aug 15, 2018 8:41 am

This week at least one QJ and maybe two will be chugging down tracks in Iowa. That's all I know about it. If someone can find more information, I'd like to know. Years back I hostled both of them at night at the same time and fired one of them (I forget the numbers) on the road for a couple hours. There were some things I liked about them, and some things that I truly disliked - like the firebox door being right at the deck which made it difficult at best to see the fire bed. Plus the door was small, which also limited vision. Being on the wrong side of the engine was sort of an experience too, but wasn't an operating issue.

I heard about this. Interesting that they're getting out of the stable again.

I was under the impression that only one of them was roadworthy. But then I THINK I read somewhere that both are operational. Not sure either way. Also, I wonder where they're going to operate. I was also under the impression that the Iowa Interstate, or whatever it's called, didn't want them operating on their tracks anymore.
But I can't verify anything.

I have heard rumors this is the last time these engines will operate. I have no clue if that is true. I am not good at keeping track of time but it may be the 1472 days of service is running out on the boilers. I hope I am wrong on all counts. Hopefully someone will have better information than I.

John, you might be right on that. I think back to when they were 'brand new' (so to speak) and it seems to be about that time. The engines were turned over to some sort of railroad club who have been caring for them but from what I've heard not operating them. So this operation is probably the last time they run no matter the reason. It also could be to move the engines to a different location too.

Here is what i found from my Iowa sources.

"Some information about the IAIS train ride on Saturday:
* Train departs Mitchellville at 8:45 am to Newton
* I do not know when this train returns to Mitchellville
* Another train departs from Mitchellville (I think) around 12:45 pm"

I also just learned that it's the 6988 that's running. Supposed to be carrying passengers to raise money for a fire department. Or something like that. Good cause in any case. Nice to know it's going to run once more.

There is a video posted today on Trainorders, by Mary McPherson, showing 6988 with train running at various locations.

There are quite clearly two Amtrak diesels behind this locomotive... I thought Amtrak was done doing this?

Video removed because I clearly need to stay off youtube when I'm exhausted. :D Also, because it was a wrong/dated video.

I might find out how that happened in a week or two. One of the Milw. 261 engineers was down there operating the QJ. He would know.

I read somewhere they hope to run more trips next year. So much for these being farewell runs. I am happy to be wrong.

6988 was indeed out and operating on the Iowa Interstate. Saturday featured 5 runs out of Mitchellville, Iowa. Sunday's trips operated out of Booneville, IA. Running at speeds up to 45mph, the trips operated in push-pull fashion with a diesel on the back end. After the Sunday trips, the 6988 deadheaded east to East Amana, and turned on the wye. On Monday, she operated west about 60 miles back to Newton, IA pulling revenue freight. There are hopes to run more next spring. Hopefully, it can happen. The benefit runs were well received, handling about 1700 people each day, and all trains were sold out.
